The second pic is nice but I don't like how a small part of the left hand is cropped out of the frame. The B/W conversion in the second also seems a little off...I"m not sure why...maybe a slight lack of contrast. Yeah, that's it, what should be white appears as gray...you're missing a portion of your brighter tones (I pulled it up in PS and looked at the histogram).

As for the ears blending, run the dodge tool around the edge and it might help them not blend with the BG so much. Otherwise it seems like a sharp photo. A tighter crop might make it a bit more intimate as well. -Sue (TSEE)
