Not bad...I don't care for the "selective color" in the first but that's a personal preference...also the mickey mouse ears are blending too well into the BG. The second pic is nice but I don't like how a small part of the left hand is cropped out of the frame. The B/W conversion in the second also seems a little off...I"m not sure why...maybe a slight lack of contrast. Yeah, that's it, what should be white appears as gray...you're missing a portion of your brighter tones (I pulled it up in PS and looked at the histogram).

Cute kids! Now you'll need to post some that really will show the ability of the 40d.

#1: Neither I am a fan of selective colors. sorry.
#2: cute baby, and lovely eyes! I would like to see the color version. as it is, it is neither soft nor pops. and the wings merge with the BG so I took time tyo undertan the whole scene.

#1 is cute...I'm on the fence with the selective coloring. As for the ears blending, run the dodge tool around the edge and it might help them not blend with the BG so much. Otherwise it seems like a sharp photo. A tighter crop might make it a bit more intimate as well.
#2 is adorable, it just lacks a little pop....I hope you don't mind, I'll take it down if you don't like it....ran a little levels on it, I think 15, 1.05, 225 (or 215?) and then dodged the eyes at 10% opacity til they got a bit clearer.

Ugh to the red.

And get down on the baby's eye level. The world is full of pictures of little kids looking upwards into the lens. :)
