You don't necessary have to be a student to buy the educational version of Lightroom... you just have to buy it from a college bookstore. I was able to buy the student license of CS3 Design Suite and educational version of Lightroom.

is the educational version of Lightroom different than the retail version if what is the difference

educational versions will not give you upgrade pricing for the next version of Lightroom. If you wanted to upgrade you would have to buy the retail/full version.

Otherwise its the same software.
