Right, I'm getting fed up with my feeble brain being able to decide between:

1D Mark III
or
40D and a 2.8Ghz, 4GB 24 inch iMac

I'm not a pro, its just a hobby. But my mind is incapable of making decisions itself. What would you get out of the two choices?

EDIT: I already have a beautiful iMac and all the glass I want

100% result for the 1D3. May as well stop there. :)

I say go for the 40D with the iMac. You'll need a computer to make your workflow a lot faster.

if you already have a stable/ good enough computer for enough photos then get the mark3

if not then get the 40d and imac

You know my views. 40D and imac...
you can always get a better camera and every year there will be a better one. but if you work out the difference between both and ask yourself how important that difference is.
There is a point where most people are satisfied with the performance of a camera......lets say (for argument sake) frames per second; 6.5fps or 10fps. in may case the difference is quite irrelevant.
I read about that from a pro he called something like "point of satisfaction" a threshold where you are satisfied with performance.
 and spend the two grand in beer

I have a beautifully working iMac. Darn your intelligent rational thinking! :D

Get a 40D and stick the rest of the cash in a savings account to cover the next bit of glass you'll want.

The 1D series is a Pro series. If you make your livelihood from your photography, beg, borrow or (not really) steal to get the best. You'll get paid more than return of you investment, plus it's tax deductible.

That means, of course, the best camera (a 1D something Mk something) and the best computer (I don't have a Mac, but I built my own PC to my own specs).

Of course, if you're an amateur with with a sizeable income or a nice inheritance, the above also applies:)!

I like the cut of your jib. :D Unfortunately my wife would have something to say about that...unless I buy her something at the same time. Hmm.

How about you buy the Mk III and then use it as an excuse to buy more glass later?

I second that!
You know as well as everybody else here that iMac doesn’t perform at it's best with non-L lenses! :D
