The photo lab monkey said "These are great. You must have a great camera. I really like the one of the waterfall."

And I'm stunned for a moment thinking "15 second exposure; f/11; neutral density filter; polarizer; standing shoeless in 2 feet of water of a freezing stream with my tripod and a remote trigger; AND LEST WE FORGET FRAMING THE SHOT!" but all I said was "Uh, yeah, I like it," as if all I did was point and shoot.

*sigh*

At least they commented on your picture. My lab never says anything. ;)

Respond with "yeah it's awesome" then offer to sell it to 'em for 2x what you paid.

I have heard that comment mentioned several times on this board. But here is the rub. 5D, 3 lenses, two tripods, various filters, workstation - all in all, at least 10 grand. For that money, I would be FURIOUS if it took crappy pictures. I don't know anyone here who would be otherwise. So when someone says, "That's a great camera", I just say, "Yes, it is."

Took my new (for me, but previously used) 70-200L f/2.8 IS lens and new 40D to the zoo this morning. As soon as I started shooting, the gentleman next to me actually commented on what a great lens I had.

Since he was older than me, it's 10am, and there were little kids and moms all around, I was OK with the compliment; other times & places, I might have worried about being rolled after a comment like that. ;) :(

Back on topic, I too have had some say, after seeing some of my photos, "you must have a great camera". Of course, before my 40D, I had a slightly better comeback, "actually, no, it's just a sophisticated P&S: Canon G7".

Maybe I should say something like "Not really. I did that with my kid's cell phone."

Or whip out a cardboard disposable and say "surrrre is!" and proceed to show them all the "features" (single button operation, no-focus lens) like it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Well, since your camera apparently wasn't able to take great pictures, the death of your gear list is no big deal. Maybe this time you will buy a camera that DOES take great shots.

LISTEN PEOPLE! We spend several hundred dollars for an X00D all the way up to several thousand dollars for an XD MkIII, and you **** that people notice that great gear produces great results!

Tell ya what, right now the Fry's ad has a 6 megapixel digital camera for $88.00 - Not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has a plastic lens. Since you all know that the gear has nothing to do with the results, you can save a fortune by selling all your Canon stuff, pocket the cash, and buy the $88.00 model at Fry's.

For me, I will continue to buy the best quality gear I can get my hands on, and when people tell me "You must have a great camera", I, for one, will tell them the truth, "Yes, I do."

all that is very true. But, when someone looks at your picture and says "Wow, thats really good, you must have a good camera" they give credit to only the camera and not you. Not everyone can take an MkIII and get a superb shot. People dont look at Annie Leibovitz's shots and say "WOW, you must have the worlds best camera!"
