Upgrading from 350d (Rebel XT)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at upgrading my body, and looking at the 400D. It seems to have a decent enough spec over the 350D to justify upgrading.

Where is the best place to get one from? I've been looking at warehouseexpress and other UK shops. Just wondered if there is any better places as competitive.

That is ... apart from travelling to the US "on business"!!

Why do you want to upgrade, what does the 350 not do that the 400 will?

I've been looking to upgrade my body for years! Seriously, I don't think there's much to choice between any of the big boys. Warehouseexpress operate a price promise and I've always found them to be a good lot to deal with (although it does annoy me that their website can't show stock levels). Put 400D into Google and see what comes back.

To be honest, when I had a 350D and the 400D came out there was really nothing there that tempted me much. I was really much more tempted by (and I eventually got) a 30D.

Right now the prices on the 30D are very low....maybe that would be a better upgrade?

What features specifically on the 400D are calling to you over the 350D?

imho, i don't see a decision-breaking difference over the 350D and the 400D.

i would suggest upgrading to the x0D models.

I would also suggest a jump to the x0d models (30d or 40d maybe).

I still have my trusty 350d and it is working fine, i sometimes need fast AF, more features. But it still works like a little beauty. When the 400d came out i didnt want it and i still dont.

My next camera will be 30d or 40d or 1d Mk2, still hoping for the latter

Well, to clear it up a little, it's not me who suggested the upgrade, but my parents. They seen Jessops leaflet offering a good deal, and suggested it to me.

Having had a look at some reviews, I am wondering if a 2.0x teleconverter or a flash would be money put to better use.

I think that an external flash (430EX based on your smaller body) would be money very well spent and would have more of a positive effect overall on your photos than any body upgrade would.

As for the TC, what lenses exactly would you be pairing this up with?

I would pair a 2X TC with any of the Canon super-tele primes like the 300 f/2.8, 400 f/2.8 or 600 f/4 without reservation. It's also Good with the 135L and 200L.

Loss of IQ is usually pretty bad with most other lenses using a 2X TC, and any slow zooms (f/4 - f/5.6) will lose AF or become very iffy. Those slow lenses also need excellent light to be at all useful with the two stop light loss cost by the TC.

Before I found the need to upgrade from the 350D to the 400D, I purchased items like the 430EX and faster primes. The flash and primes helped me take my portrait and wedding photography to a new level.

The forum can provide a lot of sound information about matching equipment to the interests of a shooter. Develop your interests and match your equipment purchases to those requirements. You'll likely find that glass and/or flash are your best ticket to achieving your photographic goals. Your 350D is a fine start and should take you a long way. Well, that my opinion anyway.

The 400D came out 6 months or so after I purchased the 350D. I did not have the urge to upgrade. I could not see much difference between the 2. Besides, I'd preferred to practise on improving picture taking and I did get good pictures from the 350D. I got the 350D about 18 months ago.

Since that period, I've overgrown the 350D and wanted to upgrade to the 30D. Was about to pull the trigger but then the rumours of the 40D was thick and furious, I waited. 1 week later the 40D was released and I upgraded to one about 2 weeks after release date.

My suggestion, like the others, either spend on a 430ex or lens or go for the 30D.

The above is just my humble, hobbyiest opinion.
