The XTi is a great camera. A lot of it really depends on what you want to do, what kind of photography are you doing / going to do?

Check out this if you haven't already it's got some good stuff in it.

Unless you shoot LOTS of frames you will want to upgrade before you have to worry about the shutter.

It's a geat camera to start with.

The next body up would be a matter of opinion. It shares the same autofocus system with the 30D but is not built like a tank.

The 40D would be an upgrade in features but not image quality.

If budget is a concern --bodies become obsolete relatively quickly--but good glass holds it's value.

Best of luck with your decision:)

I could not recomend the XTI more.
Its a great camera to get your feet wet and decide if you like this more expensive setups.

Just one thing to keep in mind.
The quality of lens you buy has THE MOST to do with image quality equipment wise.
So if you decide you want some nice glass for your XTI (I highly recomend you spend the money on glass)

Make sure you think about your upgrade path.
Will you want to move to a full frame in the future?
EF lenses can be used on both Full frame and the crop frame of the xti.
EF-S are designed only for the cropped frame.

Lenses will last longer than your body.
And cost as much if not more for the good ones.

But, how long should it last shutter wise.

This is not something to worry about unless you shoot hundreds of shots daily for some reason.

Bigger issue is to really evaluate your interests and stack that against your budget. If the XTi and an 18-55 kit lens seems like a huge expense then you might want to really think this over.

The XTi itself is an excellent camera that can do a lot of things that P&S cameras cannot. Fast shutter response, good high ISO performance and excellent image quality.

But to really outperform a P&S you really need at the very least to think about getting:

A bounceable hotshoe flash like the 430EX - $230. The onboard flash is OK for fill-in in the daylight but if you rely on it for prime illumanation your shots will look 99% like what you can achieve with a P&S.

A telephoto zoom like the EF 70-300 IS USM - $550 (there are cheaper and more expensive options). Most people like a long lens. If you have used a 12X or more superzoom P&S then you might want such a lens.

Something optically fast ranging from the EF 50 f/1.8 ($70) to the EF 85 f/1.8 ($380) to take portraits like nothing you can do with a P&S.

Also think about a bag and maybe a spare battery. Basically, if you are really stretching to get the basic camera + kit lens then a dSLR might not be the best idea.

A used G6 with a bounceable flash unit is actually a very good alternative on a tight budget.
