I'm picking up a 40D tomorrow and the store is suggesting an accessory kit that includes a grip. I'm just into photography for a hobby and I'm wondering if a grip is a good idea. Thanks for your help.

I like the grip for the added battery capacity, the extra grip area, and the vertical control.
As well the wimmins seem to think it's cool looking, so that is an added bonus.

It is not a bad idea, but it’s also not the most important thing, especially on 40D.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

The grip is nice, but necessary. Really depends on your shooting style. If you use portrait mode alot or need the exta battery capacity it will be indispensible. Are they offering the Canon grip or a 3rd party. That can make a difference as well. I personally only use the Canon grips.

wait on it. And 'accessory kit' sounds like bull**** to me. Buy the grip from b&H when you are ready for it. i would spend the money on a 430EX first.

I just installed a grip on my 40D. I also just started a discussion here about it.

.

-Canon EOS 40-D with vertical/battery grip, wireless remote shutter release
-Canon 10-22mm F3.5 USM (with hood)
-Canon 70-300mm F4 EF IS USM (with hood)
-Canon 28-135mm F3.5 EF IS USM (with hood)...and many more items.
-Check out my photography here (external link). And here (external link), too.

I assume you're talking about the Canon kit that has the Grip, Battery and Bag?

It's all about feel. When you're in the store, put the grip on the camera. I have a 20D and a 30D. I love having the grip on there. My hands aren't that big, but it just gives my pinky a place to rest. And it makes it sooooo much easier when taking portrait rather landscape shots. This is especially true when you get a really heavy lens on the camera.
