I have about 20 or so visible dust spots on my new 7 days old 40d that are visible at f33 or so. My question is, Is this normal for a new camera? I have tried to blow the dust off with a rocket blower just seemed to move it around and most stayed still. I do not feel I should have to pay 50.00 to have the sensor cleaned nor do I want to send it to canon for several weeks to hopefilly be cleaned. I know dust is normal but this seems like a lot already. So, should I return the camera for an exchange for a new one or what? Thanks

Canon clean for free. But depending on who you bought it off, i would be looking at some kind of agreement.

Yes I know Canon will clean it for free and I do shoot at a f30-up abit. I am not sure if this is normal dust or if all of the cameras have this much dust out of the box or what. I am not sure if I should just go ahead and exchange for a different camera or have it cleaned. My return deadline is nearing its end in about 10 days.

I think my 40D is OK, but then I have not shot at f30+ so I could be wrong!

I must look into that -- see if I can find a lens that steps down that far.

I believe dust issue is quite common even with the brand new cameras. My 30D had the same issue once I bought it. I'm not too much worried as you know Photoshops are doing miracles regarding dust spots.

I wouldn't worry at all providing the dust doesn't spoli your normal pictures.

Why don't you get out a rocket blower and blow the dust off?

Take it back in for an exchange. You shouldn't have to put up with it.

When I got my first 40D, than my replacement 40D, both cameras showed SUPER clean sensors at F/22.

Just wet clean it. If you spend any time at all shooting at F16 or higher you are going to have to learn how to clean you sensor anyways. Why not start now?

My 30D was like that out of the box. It's probably lubricant rather than dust.

Or just use the Sensor Cleaning feature. Mine works very well.

My new 40D was filthy out of the box. A quick couple of puffs and a wet clean or two and it cleaned right up. If the camera is working fine, you have no front/back focus issues and your happy with it except for the dust, just give it a cleaning and keep the one you have.

Yep, thats exactly what you should do! I mean the camera is now worthless and who wants a worthless camera. Clean it yourself with a blower, it would take a few minutes.
