I was in the same position as you, Steve, but for the extra $200 savings, I decided to go with B&H. I support my local pro store as much as possible, but they don't price match on-line deals at all, and $200 is just too much of a premium for me to pay them on the slight chance I may need to return the body.

I go B&H or Amazon when ever possible. Customer service is better than any local shop around me. Well worth the couple days wait.

Several days of waiting isn't gonna kill you.

Well, maybe not, but why chance it??

The local shop has it in stock, at the same price as B&H. Sales tax will be about a hundred bucks.

So, the local shop gets the deal. I should have it by the end of the day...

Body prices seem to be more closely matched between local stores and BH compared to lenses and accessories - so how much is the price difference.

If you should have to return your 40d, (and my "are you happy with your 40d" poll would suggest that you won't), chances are that neither store will have a replacement in stock anyway.

They actually have several in stock according to the guy I spoke to. I also checked Ritz, Costco, and the military exchanges around here. Only my local shop and Ritz have them, and both are the same price...

Sweet. Why you still sitting here? You should be walking out the store with a big smile on your face by now ;)

So, it was "bonus day" yesterday, and I'm now in a position to get the 40D. The positives I've heard and read far outweigh the negatives, so the decision has been made.

Steve,

I really hate to say it, but I'm on my second 40D and it too has problems. It's back at Canon for its second round of work.

I know there are many very satisfied people out there with 40Ds, however, the more I read on this and other forums, the more I am beginning to believe that Canon released the 40D too early. There are just too many accounts of people having to return their 40Ds two and three times to get a good copy; that is not right and makes me uncomfortable. If I had it to do over again, I would not have gotten a 40D. If I were you, I would hold onto that money and wait a few months. I'm betting that by late January of '08, you'll be able to pick up a new 5D body for 1700-1800 USD. If Canon doesn't make my second 40D right, it's going back to the retailer and I'm going to get a refund.

Another option for you would be getting a 30D, it's fine camera and is well-established. I'm seeing 30D bodies for $800 and kits for $1250.

You might want to think it over and do some more research before you click the "Submit Order" button.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Best,

Michael

Well, went out and got the camera this afternoon.

The weater's kinda' crappy today (but good for the SoCal fires), so I'm hoping to head out somewhere tomorrow and do a bit of shooting; probably head to either the local lakes or Balboa Park.

The LCD on this thing is just ridiculous...

":rolleyes:the more I read on this and other forums, the more I am beginning to believe that Canon released the 40D too early."

Bought mine 10 days before they 'offically' went on sale (very early one) and am very happy:D with it.

<- I wish this was mine!
