You must be very proud of your new baby! I foresee a happy future for the two of you.

I see you didn't waste any time getting that filter on there. Right now there should be half the folks seeing that nodding in agreement as a sound precaution and the other half gnashing and wailing in disagreement at the perceived foolhardy waste of the lens.

I wish Canon threw in those extras with their other lenses.

Yep! Back when I purchased my 17-55, on the day I received it there occurred a minor accidental contact with the front of the lens... luckily I had already attached a UV filter (which got slightly scratched), so my lens was safe. Yes, I understand that this would not have damaged my lens significantly, but this does not always happen; sometimes it is much worse, and it is better to be safe than sorry. I would rather replace a $70 filter than a lens worth several hundreds of dollars.

So, of course, with this brand new and long coveted L lens, I did not think twice before putting the filter on!

Hogloff, I will post photos from Sunday later.

Anything can happen. I read a post from someone not to long ago who dropped there 70-200 and the filter glass shattered. The shattered pieces gouged the lens coatings and he had to have the front element replaced. I'd cry if that happened.

Gratz on the new lens. Its definitely worth waiting for. So far no funny comments while using it but I do get funny looks. I dunno if its me or the lens. Its probably me.

No funny comments to me so far either, but quite a few amazed looks. I shot with it a day ago at our divison's annual Halloween Costume Contest and received a lot of "Wows!". Individuals and groups kept asking me to take a photo of them in hopes of seeing themselves on our company's intranet website (it so happens the webmaster called out for photos and I will submit a few). I was even asked if I was the "official photographer" of the event. I looked around - one other person had a Nikon SLR (looked like a D40 or D40x with kit lens) and many had P&S cameras with them - and answered modestly, "Well, I suppose you could say that." It is true that I was actually asked by the organizers to take photos, because I had done so last year as well, but back then virtually no employee who was not already familiar with me noticed me around or cared to have his/her photo taken at all. The big, white lens does make a difference, at least in terms of being acknowledged!

I thought it felt heavy after the first time I held it (attached to my 40D with grip), but after shooting at two events I have become accustomed to the feel. It actually feels great to hold this setup. When I switch to my backup, my Rebel XT with 17-55, I feel as if I am shooting with a toy camera.
