How about all you other 70-200 owners? Do you leave the collar on or off when shooting hand-held?

Yeah I always keep mine on and prefer it that way, I just let the collar rest in my hand and use index finger for focusing and ring for zooming. I originally found it more comfortable without but after using it for a short period of time with it on and found I prefered it. Also it allows for a much more relaxed position handholding it, allowing steadier shooting.

you must need a fairly strong index finger then, right? aren't those zoom rings kind of stiff?

Well you can support it with your thumb too if necesary, I've never really thought about finger strength but I've played Bass for years so my finger strength has improved quite a lot through that.

Mine arent very stiff no, theres some resitance but they move smoothly.

Lucky you!!! Nice lens and it is apparent that you are extremely happy. I think this place is somewhere that we can all act like it is Christmas everyday as the fun of getting new toys is exhilarating (at least to me). Can't wait to get my long lens and right that will be in probably Jan-Feb-Mar. This was laready stated but you have to post a DUCK picture and it better not be the AFlAC duck. LOL

As simwells mentioned, the zoom ring on my 70-200 is smooth, but not loose. The zoom mechanism on all my other lenses is slightly to moderately stiff. Although I don't want to generalize for all L lens (since I only have this one), a smooth zoom ring is probably one of the significant differences (and benefit) of an L over a non-L lens.

I was too lazy to go find a duck nearby as my first shot with this lens. I also failed to shoot a real duck for the first shot on my 40D a few months ago. Hopefully I will not be cursed with equipment malfunction... so far, so good!

once you go L glass, you wont go back. Trust me Once i got my first L glass, I wont buy anything that is not Pro grade glass, ie L glass... Next you will want a wide L glass, like the 17-40F4 L or the 16-35F2.8 L.
