I'm waiting for my new 40D to arrive and have a quick question re memory...I've seen a few people comment that a 4GB card fills extremely fast with this camera but others haven't commented on that being a problem.

I'm wondering if it's worth going to 8GB or if 4GB isn't too much of a pain. How many RAWs more or less are you getting on your 4GB?

Off the top of my head, I'm getting around 300 or so raw only shots from 4Gb, maybe a bit more. For most circumstances I find having a couple of 4Gb cards more than enough. Only when shooting sports did I wish I'd had a bigger card as I was shooting a lot at high fps, high burst.

I also have a portable hard drive for day trips and re-use the CF cards if I need to.

Hope that helps.

I use a 8gig as my primary and it hold just under 600 pics. I keep 4gigs as backups. Many like the 4gigs as they hold about a DVD's worth of pics making backup to DVD very easy.

I have a 2gb card and can only get 160 or so before its full... Taking pics at 6.5 fps it'll be full before you know it... Selecting a memory card really matters on what you're going to take pics of.. You'll want no less than a 2 gb card... Def wish i woulda bought a couple 2gbs... San Disk Extreme IIIs were on sale at Circuit City and Best buy for $40 the other week.. Ugh!

I echo BogongBreeze's comment. Just over 300 RAW images for me with a 4G card.

I only have a 4G card and a 1G backup, but I have a backup device and was able to survive using the 1G as the 4G was being backed up.

(for sports, I am still shooting JPG, so I haven't noticed a problem yet)

Congrats on your camera!

I use 4 gig cards on my 30D because it's only an 8mp camera and a 4 gig card holds over 400 shots. This is somewhere high in the range of an afternoon's shooting for me and I've only run out of card space once or twice.

For my 5D, a 12 mp camera, I use an 8 gig card as my primary -- the camera says it has an over 400 pic capacity, so same logic.

Be sure you have more than one card, though!

This afternoon I spent a couple of hours at a wildlife refuge/wetlands along the Columbia River north of where I live, catching the beginning of the late fall/winter migratory seasons -- swans, egrets, herons, etc. When I got home tonight and set up to download my pics, I found out I had over500 images on the 8 gig card, with some space to spare. It made me a happy camper that I didn't have to stop and swap cards in the middle of getting shots of a skitterish egret or heron!

So, I wouldn't hesitate to get an 8gig card for your primary for the 40D

With mine, I get about 70 shots per Gigabyte of memory. It chews up memory cards like there's no tomorrow!
