I am selling my 10D on Craigslist because I just bought a 40D.

I have no idea what the shutter count is, but I have always left the file count on "Continuous" .

One buyer looked at a photo file number and saw "817-1773".

He said that "1773" means that it has about 70,000 actuations!

Is that possible. I mean can he really tell what the shutter count is by looking at a photo's file number?

ps. I have only had this camera for about 6 months. Looking back at the file names, they are all over the place. I have switched CF cards many times as well.

Did he follow that statement up by offering you a lower price?

Image count and shutter actuation count are not the same.
If you have never

- manually reset image counter,
- preformed complete camera shutdown, i.e. removed both batteries,
- inserted CF card with higher image count,
- shot any tethered shots

then and only then image count will be equal to shutter count.
For cameras other than 1 series there is no way for the user to know the shutter count number, only Canon service centers can do that.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Craigslist Can be pretty funny sometimes. The other day there was a guy here selling a 5D body only for $3000. When I posted my 300D w/ Battery grip + some extras for around $500, I had some guy e-mail me to tell me that he got one for $200 and a grip for $50. I also got some rude ***hole that was pitching a fit because I didn't post pictures of the stuff, but offered to send some if anyone wanted.

People are stupid. That's just life I guess.

Good one,

Yes, he did. I was asking $400 and he said"

" The way I read your camera If true is that it has upwards of
70,000 shots. That would be quite high. Also If the shutter ever
needs to be replaced It could cost around $400 to $500. If you don't sell it for your asking price I would consider It for $300.00
"

I think for $300 I will just keep it. It is pretty heavy, so it can make a good door stop
or paper weight until I feel like using it again.

It will cost no more than $200, I'd say..

I don't honestly know what a used 10D is going for, but considering a refurbed can be had for less than $500, with a 90 day warranty (I bought one in January, as close to new as new can be :) ) and the fact that the shutters do go eventually (mine went on my older one at 48,000 approx) and it does cost $300+ to fix, that person may not be off in his bid.

I certainly wouldn't pay $400 for a used 10D.

the 8 column represents the numbered folders in 10s of thousands...that column begins with 1 and becomes 2 when you complete the first 10,000, and 8 when you complete 70,000...

while this is true, it does not represent the number of shutter actuations. as someone points out, if you reset the image count, then insert a card with pictures already on it, the camera with start from there.

For example, if i bought a brand new 40D, inserted the card from the posters camera, then it would 'look' like my 40D has ~70,001 actuations, when it only has one :)

There is no reliable way to determine shutter actuations on non 1 series bodes...

oh and about the price, 20D's are going for 500 ish (i've seen a few below 500), so 300-350 for a 10d seems pretty in-line to me. maybe couteroffer at 350 if you really want to sell it.

Sounds like a bit of bovine scatology.
Chase this guy, and keep your 10d. It's
a great camera!

i'd have been all over that $300 if i were trying to unload a 10d.

Well, from what I've found it's not possible to find the exact shutter count even from a 1-series camera, although some downloadable programs do give a reasonably accurate estimate assuming the shutter was never changed. Hence I'd be surprised if there's a hidden algorithm somewhere to get the count out of a 10D.

I think you should tell the buyer that according to how you read it, the shutter count is only about 7K. Hardly ever used. Then tell him that you're already selling it cheap!
