tell him that's not an accurate figure as you have
switched CF cards multiple times and that file names change
frequently. I'd counter with whatever the lowest you'd accept
for it...

Even better, ask him which ‘number of actuations’ he prefers and give it to him!
You can set file number to any value between 1 and 99,999.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Since the 40D came out they have brought considerably less money at Ebay. 300.00 is average for body sales. I would just keep it.

If you can afford to keep it, just keep it. At least that way you'll have a back up body.

the 8 column represents the numbered folders in 10s of thousands...that column begins with 1 and becomes 2 when you complete the first 10,000, and 8 when you complete 70,000...

while this is true...

I didn't suggest anything else...

OP can just reset the folder/file # to the start, 101-001 if he wanted to...

$400 is reasonable for a good condition 10D. I would say keep it as well though, its a great camera.

Canon Cananda wants $150 to do minor checkup and give me a shutter count. For that price. I'll just sell it for what ever I can get, or maybe just keep it. Although it sure would be interesting to see how many actuations are REALLY on it. I have trouble imagining 80,000 actuations in 4 years for a general use camera.

Anyway I have reset the file counter to 100-0001 to avoid a similar "discussion" with a future buyer. I have 2 others buyers expressing interest at $350....

It will cost no more than $200, I'd say..

My 10D's shutter just died so I sent it to Canon to get an estimate. They gave me a price of $325. I'm pretty sure mine had right around 10,000 clicks, so it was disappointing.

I canceled the repair and sold the camera on eBay to someone to use for parts. I got just over $200 for it so I was more than satisfied with that. It will help towards the cost of a new 40D (which I hope to be ordering soon).

Thanks, for all the replies.

I just sold my 10D, 18-55, and 50 Mark1 all together for $460. (He drove a hard bargain). It was a little less than I was asking for all 3, but I was happy to see them all gone. My 50 was never very sharp and had a little dust after 16 years.

I promptly went out and bought a Simga 17-70. Just a few shots with it and I am VERY impressed. I finally have a lens that takes sharp photos.

My next goal is to sell the 24-85 and 100-300, and get a 70-200 F4.

Good use of your 10D money on the Sigma 17-70.
