The IR conversion makes it easier to take infrared photos. Camera sensors are very sensitive to infrared and normally have a filter to block this portion of the spectrum. In a conversion, this filter is removed and another put in place that blocks non-infrared wavelengths. A converted camera will take a photo in infrared with normal daylight exposure times.

Don't do this to your 10D unless you want to take infrared only photos. People generally convert their 10D when they have newer bodies for regular shots and the 10D is just lying around not being used at all.

Here's a shot from my converted 10D:

Typically vegetation will show up white and the sky will be black or very dark.

I've dabbled a bit and come up with similar results when I use an infrared preset in Lightroom. I wouldn't convert a camera but I suppose for some it makes more sense to have a dedicated IR camera that shoots that way and eliminates the PP step.

It also gets exposures down to reasonable levels rather than the 30 sec. or so you need using an unconverted camera with an IR filter. But converting a camera to IR won't eliminate the PP step, just as an action on an unfiltered shot won't give you real IR.

IR (Infrared) is just another aspect in the world of photography. Something else to play around with.

I saw a few IR shots a few years back and liked it. Bought a IR filter and what a pain! Long exposures and lots of practice. Then I found out about converting a digital camera to IR.
You ruin the camera if converted as it doesn't take quite the same type of photos :) But if you want to get IR photos, it's the best way to go.
i had my older 10D converted and find myself shooting a lot with it, trying to get some good shots. Got the 10D back about a month ago and having a lot of fun.

That's a nice picture, IR has a different way of looking at pictures, something like having a different form of art to it.

Where do you have this conversion done, Canon?

I had my 10D converted at Lifepixel.com
I went with the deep B&W conversion ... black & white only ... the alternatives are all explained on the website.

I'm finding that it takes a normal color scene and gives it some dramatic looks. This next shot is rather drab in color ... looks pretty cool in IR ... different, anyway :)

BTW ... that was shot at 1/45th @ f/11 with the 10D and and the 17-40 L It was resized, I adjusted the contrast slightly and added some sharpening ... very minor editing using Irfanview!
