I started using Downloader Pro because I wanted to download from the camera and Lightroom does not support downloading from a Canon.

I see now the Lightroom 1.2 download feature is a lot better. Still does not support direct from a Canon camera, but is much more feature rich.

It would be interesting to hear some opinions on using each. Pros and cons.

Why do you want to download from the camera? Get a card reader and your problems are solved.

I do have a reader on my system. I guess I just got used to doing it from the camera. Rather than pulling the card in and out of the camera a zillion times. Granted, I can do it both ways. Tried the card using Lightroom yesterday and the advantage I see there is it uploads to the hard drive, and imports and the same time.

Interested in what others think about the pros and cons.

I haven't downloaded from my camera since the Kodak CX4300 (external link) days.

I'm sure your camera loves to be turned ON/OFF a zillions times as well.

You are hung up on the camera. What do you know about both of the software?

OK, lets forget about downloading from camera vs card.

Does anyone have experience using Downloader Pro and also downloading with the Lightroom downloader?

I think you're over-analyzing it.

I only use Downloader Pro, so can't comment on LR, although i do use LR.
The reason I use DL Pro is because once setup it automatically creates a file/folder structure of my choosing and automatically creates a backup copy of the files being downloaded in a seperate location using the included 'plugin'.

At the end of the day both programs will download files for you, although as you point out LR won't 'talk' to a camera.
Personally I just think DL Pro is better (for me) but then I use a card reader...

i've never heard of anyone who wouldn't use a program because it would not allow them to download from the camera, nor anyone who wanted to download from the camera once they've tried a card reader :D.

I use DL Pro, mainly 'cause it tags my images with the GPS Coordinates but the flexibility of assigning foldernames etc. is great. I also use a card reader.

cheers

I think you're over-analyzing it.

If you will be doing a repetitive action for any length of time, analyzing it is a perfect action to save you a lot of time over the long run.

For what its worth, I decided not to use the Lightroom import function and use DownloaderPro for my imports. I find that it allowed me to do more customized file naming and metadata tags over Lightroom. This saved me time on each import, and thus substantial time savings over the year.

I'm hoping that V2 of Lightroom will fix that, and I can do all my initial pre-processing in Lightroom without having to rely on DownloaderPro.

I dunno I don't find importing to be that big of a deal. Everything goes in a folder called YYYY-MM-DD-EVENTNAME. EVENTNAME is usually the BrideLastName-GroomLastName or Subject...anything to identify who/what it was. Images are YYYY-MM-DD-XXXX.CR2/CRW with XXX being the sequence number. I can do that with Lightroom and it's simple.

Thats easy for Lightroom to handle since its a basic import scenario. When you go beyond that, is where DownloaderPro comes in handy. Or even better is Image Ingester with more functionality if one really needs it.

Does version 1.2 of Lightroom not make you think you could use it, rather than Downloader Pro?
