Well,
That makes three Boilermakers here in this post. I was there in the mid-90's. $20 is $20, but I'm waiting to see what the 5D drops to when the new MKII version comes out. I don't think it will be as substantial as say the price drops we've seen in the xxD series b/c there's not too many full frame bodies available right now...maybe 2 from Canon at this point? I think the initial price point if and when a new 5D becomes available will go a long way in determining what the older 5D will move to as well. We'll see. --joe

I see your points guys. But I'm a high school student, so I got excited over a $20 drop.

I was at a photog Workshop and one of the guys that is an amazing photographer who uses a Haselblad 39 and a 5D. I told him I wanted to get a 5D and he made an ugly face and was pretty stern on waiting for the new one. So there goes my plan on a new camera. I have to wait at least 5 more months unless I just get impatient and get one anyways.

That might be one of the most ridiculous things I've read on this forum to date.

First, there is no reason why some random person, regardless of how talented he is, should completely dictate your choice of camera or anything for that matter.

Second, and more importantly, the 5D is an incredible camera. Pros have been using it since its introduction a few years ago and many will continue to use it regardless of what "replaces" it. And, they will still have plenty of success. Just because something new comes out, it doesn't mean the previous becomes obsolete. I intend to buy a 5D in the next few months, I don't care what comes out... I'll use my 5D for a long time as it can do exactly what I want. It will be a great tool for my landscape photography and it will allow me to make large(larger), sharp prints to sell.

What if the new one is 4500.00 and the original drops to around 1800.00. Will that make the decision easier?

Thats a bit extreme. Chances are that the new one will be what the old one was and the old one will drop a few more $$$. For instance since the introduction of the 40D the 30D has dropped to well under $1000 new. I expect the same will happen to the new 5D replacement.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Why not just pick up a good used one for less than $1800?

Eh, I don't mind used lenses but I tend to steer clear of used bodies for some reason.

And, why not let the NEW price keep dropping, then that $1800 might be $1600 in a couple months.

You'll pick up a lot more than the $20 simply by keeping a good eye on the exchange rate.
With the Aussie$ flogging the bejesus out of the US$ in recent times, and you using your contacts in the US, everything should be looking good for a quick purchase... ;)

A college student and thinking of a 5D, YIKES!!! Times sure have changed.;)

Had the same reaction too! Yes, college students can work and have jobs. I had 2 jobs and slept 5 hours a night in college. I don't think I had a hobby that would allow me to drop $2200 on a camera. Unless it's your field of study... as said above: YIKES!!! Times have changed!

I think you'd be surprised how quick $2200 can actually add up when selling large prints, images to magazines, and postcards... those are my three my most profitable areas. Contests also add a bit of pocket change from time to time.

My field of study is engineering, that's my main "job". I also work 20 hours a week at a local outdoors store, that money DOES NOT go to photography, it goes to living expenses.

At times, my photography is more lucrative than my 20-hour/week job and any photographic profits I put directly back into photography.

So once again, thank you both for the vote of confidence.

I have to agree a 5D and college kid seems like a stretch...........when I was a college kid I shot with a very inexpensive film camera that was given to me by my grandfather and I struggled to pay for film. I sold pictures to newspapers, magazines and anyone who had money or food to exchange.
Times have changed!

If $20 buys three medium pizzas, then $2,000 buys 300 medium pizzas. I guess it's a question of which you want more - pizza or a camera.
