I also had two 40D's with the same problem, so I sent them both back and settled for the 30D instead, it works great.
I really don't need the hassle of returning cameras when Canon screws up.
If I never had so many Canon accessories, I would have switched to Nikon

Brian

Here is my two cents. I have a 40d that was front focusing and I decided to take it to Canon which is 15 minutes away. They made some adjustments to the pcb assembly, but said it was within factory specs. I got it home after four days and after all my testing it was much better, but still ff.

2nd trip to canon service center with all my canon glass. I told them it was the second time in and I'm not going to take the soccer mom answer of its within factory specs. I even brought in test shots which they didn't care about or want to see. They had the body for one day and called me to say it was ready. I called back and questioned what was performed. Within factory specs. It took a manager at Canon repair to say he would take it outside and take some shots with a chart. They made some minor adjustments and now my 40d is sharp as can be even with my third party glass.

If I were you I would take this one to Irvine and ask to speak to a manager. Once I talked to him they actually listened to me and corrected the problem.

You were very lucky to be so close to Canon. It took me 6 months total using email and the phone to get it sorted out.

I've noticed that the 40D images are a little softer than the 30D. Try using one of those lens focus graphs and do some testing. I thought mine was also front focusing, but actually it was fine.

I don't know how you did it. I don't think I could have lasted that long.

You don't understand how it works, JD: we are Canon's QC people.

Sad, but it does seem to be heading that way. It seems like electronics all head the same path, low cost throw away merchandise.

Mostly through a combination of Fujifilm Reala and Single Malt. Though The Great Big Hammer and the Nikon were looming awfully close towards the end. :)
