FYI, Costco is selling a kit of Sanyo eneloop re-chargeable batteries that can hold the charge really really long compare to what on the market now.
8 - AA eneloop 2000mhA
4 - AAA eneloop 850mhA
1 - charger
2 - adapter to C or D size
1 - carry case
All for $25.99 :D

8 AA usually goes for around $20 on the net + shipping so this is a great deal.

One thing I want to know is how are these stand up to external flash use?

I've been looking for this package at my local Costco for the last few weeks after reading about it on the web and still haven't seen it. Grrr.

I just bought the AlphaPower Lacrosse battery charger along with 8 eneloop AA batteries.

This particular charger is great, and the batteries last and last, at least in my 580 ex and 580 ex II. I used them recently at a very dark wedding. I shot with the 580 II, and probably shot close to 800 or more shots, and the flash was quick to recharge and one set lasted the entire night.

the original 580 probably shot 500 shots or so and one set lasted the entire time.

These batteries do rock, they outlast some 2400 mAh batteries.
