(in relation to wedding shoots)

I've only had my 17-55mm a couple of weeks and love it. I was just wondering how often you guys use your lens hoods. Just trying to decide whether or not to bother picking one up.

Thanks!

I just got my 17-55 and lens hood, but I love it - I'll probably get hoods for all of my lenses now. Kicks arse for shooting into the sun.

Mine is *always* on.

It protects the front of the lens (I don't use UV filters) and minimises flaring (which I've heard can be a significant issue with the 17-55 without a hood ... yet to prove it for myself).

It also looks perdy.

Get one!

I shot a couple weddings without it and then knew I had to have one. I had one on my 70-200 (because it came with the lens), and found it was great. Not only does it help protect the glass from getting bumped but the biggest thing for me is that it helps keep rain off the lens. Most of the time here it's raining at least a little bit and I get sick of constantly wiping the lens dry. I also love shooting groups and such shooting into the sun with flash , so it helps bring up the contrast in that situation.

Well, with such a fast reply like this, I guess it'd be smart to go ahead and get one. I've got them for all my other lenses and was aware of the increased flare on the 17-55mm, but figured I'd ask.

Thanks!

Ditto to everyone else. I always use a hood on all my lenses.

i always put one on, regardless of lens. Lens protection is my primary purpose, I always hit my lens on people and walls very often whenever i sling my camera on my side.

Just a follow-up... can someone shoot me an image of the 24-105 and 17-55 hoods side by side close up? I tried using my 24/105 hood today and it seems to work well. I'd just like to see how different they are before blowing $50 on a minimal difference.

Thanks!

Size matters:D

Hoods protect your lens from more than flare (knocking into stuff).

I can't comment about the 24-105 hood, but i know that my 10-22 hood fits on it( not that I think it does too much) But I do notice flare when shooting in sunlight if I dont have the 17-55 hood on

Yea, I instictively grabbed my 24-105 hood instead of the 10-22. Since I couldn't see any vignette with it, I began to wonder if it was enough. Still, I'd love to see the two side-by-side in an image for a comparison.

haha, yeah it definitely beefs up the "look" of your lens and adds an extra dose of "you must be a pro" sentiment in those around you! But yeah, definitely get a lens hood, its only for the better due to all the reasons listed in earlier posts.

I second Headspin, even if I don't have the 17-55, I'm using the hood on my 24-70L all the time, no matter indoor / outdoor.
Makes the camera even bigger (which is not so easy with the 1D series :))
