It happend to me when i just got my 40D (with different cards), i couldn't figure out why.
though when i didn't use the canon software to transfer the files and only copy paste thorugh the normal windows procedure it stopped.

another assupmtion was that maybe the new raw version or the file type you choose on your camera may affect the file.

try to download all updates for the software you use to processes the raw files.

Are you formatting your card after you delete all the photos each time you download? I always format my cards between shoots.

I would suggest getting a better card to reduce the risk of these things later on. You have thousands in equipment but want a $20 card.......... what are you thinking! :)

I have several pics like this. It is caused by data corruption in the header file. How that data corruption got there is a different issue. It could very well be a card problem, or a data transfer problem, or even a software issue. Mine actually turned out to be an issue with some image viewer software. Every time I viewed a directory it updated a data file containing links to thumbnail pics. If I viewed the CF card directly and the card was full the software was not smart enough to sense this and overwrote picture data.

So just viewing the file corrupted it? Nasty behavior.

What software was this?

-js

Imagine traveling to mexico city and having your entire trip of photos come out like this. Strange thing was on the camera LCD the pictures would show up fine... when i tried on my computer at home about 1/3 of the photo was similar to what you have shown.

Viewing created a thumbnail file and it was that files creation that tanked my pics. The software was a free image browser I picked up from Tucows. I can look up the exact name when I get home but it was something like Imagebrowser or something like that. Needless to say, it did not stay on my PC.

I had this happen on a SanDisk Ultra II 4GB this past weekend on 3 photos so it isn't just cheap cards.

What you saw was the embedded jpeg file. Mine was also fine. In fact upon initial viewing on the computer it was fine, that is until the RAW file was rendered. The embedded jpeg was fine but the RAW was corrupt.

I used to work at a photofinishing place - where all the pros and newspaper photographers got their stuff done - and we saw this sort of thing from people who didn't reformat their memory cards regularly. Anytime your memory card is empty you should reformat it (and if it's never empty - empty it from time to time).
