The technology will plateau at some point and the improvements will become even more slightly incremental and then the pace of releases will slow. In addition, as more and more people people obtain DSLRs the market will start to saturate and new sales will drop.
Remember, film SLR's were developed over a period of 30-50 years - digital SLR's are still in their youth.

It's interesting -- these discussions have been going on for years! Back when the 10D came out, people guessed that it was pretty much as good as it was gonna get, resolution-wise.
Now, resolution on a cropped camera is up to 10mp and we have a prosumer full frame with 12mp, and that's just the prosumer line. Think about the 1Ds Mk III with 21mp!
I don't even want to think about MF digitals, like Hasselblad and others are making. I don't want to keep wiping off the drool. I'll have to be satisfied once I bite the bullet for one of the 1D/1Ds line, whenever that'll be!
Who knows where things will end up? Like you said, Mark, the technology is still young!
