i think my biggest issue is trying to get consistency from when i see the picture on camera screen from the monitor and from the printer. i send my stuff out and it seems i don't get a consistent picture, when i compare it to my monitor.

i would love to shoot 4x5. i have a friend of mine who does a lot of 4x5 and they are amazing. i do shoot some medium format, i have a kiev, the lenses are sharp but i'm not a fan of the shutter.

Welcome to POTN! ;)

Just because a new body comes out, doesn't mean you need to get it. ;) I plan on keeping my 30Ds until at least the successor to the 40D comes out... but more likely longer. There are still people here that shoot with 10Ds... ;)

There are still people here that shoot with a D60!!!! Me. IMO, upgrading everytime a new body comes out is a waste of money and time (the time to figure out the new system). I would rather invest in gLass, lessons, literature, etc.

The advantage of a newer body is extremely minimal at this point. I suspect that most people upgrade for improved functionality rather than IQ.

Your 1500 - 3000$ scenario doesn't seem all that bad to me because I probably saved that much during the past year by not having to purchase film.

joevol,
Welcome to the forum :)

for me to try the new technology i now have to spend $1500-3000 every year instead of $6-8 dollars.

Well that doesn't seem to be a very accurate comparison.
First do you only shoot one roll of film a year? ??? If yes how about with your 30D, do you only shoot 24-36 exposures a year? ???

Second like others have said you don't have to update each time a new model comes out. Back in the film days did you update your 35mm SLR each time they came out with a new model? ???
I still have my original DSLR the Canon 10D and it still works fine, however my 5D and 40D are better in many areas. I still have 16 x 20" and smaller photos printed from the 10D and they still look beautiful to my and others eyes. So upgrade isn't a true requirement for me, but to me upgrade is a nice bonus :)

The IQ of the bodies isn't increasing damatically, I'm sure you don't NEED to upgrade each year :p

I second that. The main thing that changes with each new body seems to be speed, bigger LCD and less and less noise. The 20D is still a great camera that compares to the 40D nicely IMO. Some will never be happy and always upgrade, some wait a bit and some, like me, love to read about it all on POTN

john B. i shot much more than one of film and shoot more than 36 exposures. i'm was comparing that it was easier getting newest technology in film that it is getting a new cameral. as for getting new film cameras when they came out, i think that's comparing apples and oranges. if you have a low quality film, it doesn't matter how expensive your body is.

I have already eclipsed the cost of my XTI with lenses alone, and I don't have expensive lenses. Now I am getting addicted to lighting. It's probably going to cost $2-3k to finish my basement which is supposed to be my studio- does that cost count? This week I am planning on buying a nice tripod. Since I got my 10-22 and 430EX, I have out grown my current bag... WTF!

In answer to your question, you can still have a cheap digital body like I do and no- it never seems to end! I think if someone gave me $50k today, I could spend it all on camera gear in 15 minutes at B&H. Maybe even less.

If you must know...

The technology will plateau at some point and the improvements will become even more slightly incremental and then the pace of releases will slow. In addition, as more and more people people obtain DSLRs the market will start to saturate and new sales will drop.

Remember, film SLR's were developed over a period of 30-50 years - digital SLR's are still in their youth.

You're only mad if you think you NEED to upgrade each time they bring out a new body.

There are a lot of mad people on these forums as it seems like many start to foam at the mouth when a new camera is announced.

It's interesting -- these discussions have been going on for years! Back when the 10D came out, people guessed that it was pretty much as good as it was gonna get, resolution-wise.

Now, resolution on a cropped camera is up to 10mp and we have a prosumer full frame with 12mp, and that's just the prosumer line. Think about the 1Ds Mk III with 21mp!

I don't even want to think about MF digitals, like Hasselblad and others are making. I don't want to keep wiping off the drool. I'll have to be satisfied once I bite the bullet for one of the 1D/1Ds line, whenever that'll be!

Who knows where things will end up? Like you said, Mark, the technology is still young!
