I am looking to replace my old 17" CRT. I definitely want something with a bigger screen size and have been looking at the Dell 2407 -HC. Is there anyone using this monitor (or something similar in price and size) for photo editing? if so, whats your opinion of it.

I must admit I am very skeptical about changing to a LCD from a good quality CRT - should I be worried ?

What exactly do you think you should be worried about? I think you will find that these days, LCD's are more than acceptable for this type of work.

Thanks for that. I am only going by what I have read on various web sites, I have found plenty of post where people say that LCD's are still not up to a good Quality CRT's for image editing (apart from the very top of the range LCD's costing several thousand $)

Well some of the cheaper LCD's may not be ideal, but IMO, you don't need to spend thousands of dollars to get an LCD monitor that is good for image editing.

Depends on the LCD. There are cheap ones (quality wise, not price) and good ones. I want through four 24” inch LCD before I settled on one I liked. The first one was a Samsung 24”. Cost a bunch and I though it looked good in the store. When I got it home I started to notice color fringing and poor color control. No matter how hard I tried, I could not get the monitor to calibrate. I exchanged that for another Samsung and that had the same result. I tried an Acer and though the picture was sharper and the color accurate, it was dim and in daylight difficult to see. I then exchanged it for a Viewsonic 24” and couldn’t be happier. It is much sharper, clearer, brighter than my old Sony 21” CRT. So shop around and don’t be afraid to take it back if it’s not meeting your expectations. I never had to offer an excuse on why I didn’t like it, just that it was not meeting my expectations.

Thanks for the links. There is some interesting reading there. It is as I thought, not straight forward. Trouble is that most reviewers tend to lean towards Gaming, Video, and general use and there is very little info for the Photo editor.

Buy a cheap lcd monitor and then get a a monitoir calibrator. They are more essential than a good monitor. Huey calibrators are good

The question is pretty much moot now what with the nearly total disappearance of CRT's from the line up.
Indeed the best photo editing monitors are no longer being made (high end Sony aperture grills and there ilk)

This is still true IMHO, but...
At this point, the question is really what good LCD or what good used CRT. (for the faithfull only, I would not advise the used CRT route as it is stop gap) if cost is an issue, to get top of line CRT-ish performance in an LCD you are correct it will cost a lot more than anything "Dell" has to offer.

FYI Calibration will not make a bad LCD a good one, so get a good one and calibrate it.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Think I might go for the Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP-HC and also get a decent calibrater.

Calibrators don’t make a cheap monitor better. Sometimes it doesn’t make a good monitor better. The first 24” LCD I picked up, Samsung, I just could not calibrate. Every time I got close it looked like crap. Second one did the same.

The Dell 20" Widescreen 2007 FPW is very good. Replaced my ex Formac which was also very good. I also use EyeOne 2 calibration and a crap monitor is still crap even when calibrated. Makes a big difference on a decent monitor tho'..
