Went to the BMX track for their practice session after work. Open track with no races, just riders practicing (or just riding) for fun. Setting sun provided great light for a while and then the dusk with a flash-fill made the riders stand out nicely. All types of riders from nationally ranked to just learning.

Actually practicing:

Showing off for the camera:

The bike and helmet weighs as much as the rider:

Reminds me of the movie E.T.

Showing off for the camera (again):

Don’t look at the camera when your riding:

This landing was going to hurt in a half second more:

Sorry, didn't take the shot during the top tube impact (wincing, in sympathy instead). But to satisfy the carnage desires:

Or from a different race (Norba Nationals two years ago)

Used a 1D mkII with 70-200 2.8 (non-IS) and and 550EX flash. the camera was set in AV mode with either 2.8~4 as the lens setting and let the camera set the shutter speed. I used ISO 100 to 1600 as the daylight went down. I am amazed that the camera auto-focused in the last shots ( I really could not see the riders coming it was so dark)

I adjusted the flash output down -2/3 and used high speed sync to not blow out the foreground. The flash was used in the normal position mounted on the hot shoe with no diffuser used.

I had to tweak in Photoshop the twilight pictures some kill the red-eye and boost the contrast.

It was a lot of fun to shoot, as the better riders really show-off when they see a camera. When you show them the photo (even in the small camera LCD), they get excited and try harder. If you can find a local track, I would highly recommend shooting both the races and practice prior (hint, you'll make a bunch of friends, if you post the photos for the riders use. bring cards with the web address. They will use them for their Myspace photos) As with most types of bike races, as long as you're out of the rider's way and check with the track, you can wander around the track for different angles and backgrounds (hint: try to keep Port-potties out of the background, sky is much better). Just make sure that you have a good exit plan if a bike comes at you (they hurt when they hit).

Regards
Rick

Nice pictures, I have been trying to get out to the Newberg track in Oregon to take pictures I just haven't found the time.

As a ex-bmx racer, I never wore a cup but I am sure ther are people who do.

Thanks: Given that most of the race is a flat out sprint, Most riders learn pretty quickly to move the bike to one side or the other avoid the top tube impact on the more sensitive parts rather than wear protection.

Rick
