Well, me generally having a foot in both camps (using / not using filters) I have decided that filters may be a good thing in certain circumstances.
I.E. when my Manfrotto tripod/20D+grip/16-35L hits the deck from eyelevel onto concrete.

After carefully removing the remains of the Hoya filter, I find the lens working fine, the camera still apparently also functioning properly.
I just need to straighten the very slight ding in the filter thread and I'll be sorted for another one.
I consider myself very lucky this week.
