Does the 500 DG have a wireless transmitter built-in? Is there any (cheap) receiver I can buy to trigger off my Sunpak flashes thru their hotshoe? The Will the cactus v1/v2 work?

Thank you for your help. I'm kind of new to flash and don't want to waste my $$$ on things I will not work.

There are also optical slaves that fit on the hotshoe of the sunpak flash that arent too expensive....

I have a optical slave trigger. The only problem is it's triggered by the pre-flash...

Not sure but i think there is some function you have to enable/disable so you dont get the preflash.(or maybe its switching it to manual mode cant remember where i read it)

you can download the manual for the super from Sigma's website as a PDF, and yes it can be set for master or slave.

What Sunpak flash units do you have? Sort of hard to suggest a setup without knowing exactly what gear you have.

Enjoy! Lon

I have a optical slave trigger. The only problem is it's triggered by the pre-flash...

Set your main flash to 1/128 power on manual.

The Sigma EF-500 DG Super has E-TTL wireless master capability, but...
1) It's only designed to work with other Sigma Supers or Canon EX flash units with E-TTL slave capability.
2) It doesn't work very well, in my experience.

However, if the Sunpak you mention is a regular old automatic/manual flash unit such as their 383 model, then it can be used as a slave by attaching an inexpensive optical slave sensor.

Any flash unit can be a "master" to optical slaves, as long as the master is not in E-TTL mode. Your Sigma Super, in manual mode, can be a master.

What's more, the Sigma Super has an optical slave sensor built-in. So it can be the slave while the Sunpak plays the role of master. Because of this capability, the Sigma Super and Sunpak 383 plus slave attachment are a wonderfully versatile combination. Both units are in my bag at all times.
