Sunpak Autozoom 2600 - 70's flash :-) Safe for XT?

OK, that makes more sense. Thank you. But why does it have to be manual mode to trigger an optical? Doesn't it just 'see' the light and trigger on that? Sorry for the silly questions. I'm just starting to learn about flash and although I've read a lot already, the gear still confuses me.

In ETTL mode an EX flash puts out a pre-flash - the Evaluative flash which is used to determine the flash settings for the main flash - and the optical slaves will see that pre-flash and fire prematurely.
