Took a photo a a blank piece of paper at f22 with my 40D to check for dust and this is what i saw

http://www.pbase.com/johnang/image/88269324 (external link)

have tried different lenses to make sure it wasn't a lens issue but same results.
ran another test and it starts showing up at f11

should i try cleaning the sensor first or take it straight back to canon

I see some smudge and dust specks. How long have you had the camera? If you just bought it like a week ago, maybe bring it back to the store for an exchange. Otherwise, use proper cleaning method to clean it yourself, or send it to canon and let them clean it.

Dirty sensor - get it cleaned or clean it yourself.
If everything else is okay, it is not worth returning perfectly good camera only for that.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

yes, get a copperhill method cleaning kit and clean that thing. It'll be better than brand new in most cases. Most of the time, dust in lenses will not show up in images.

Nothing to be worried about :) looks like the sensor has smudges caused by dust and moisture maybe?

Uh, the parallel lines on the left look like scratches to me. Still, maybe they'll go away. I'd be worried.

But I'd try to clean them off...

The two little black dots are dust but I'd be really interested to find out exactly what those lines are. Keep us posted if you find out what they are.

The small darker spots are definitely dust. I think the other shapes are left over residue from a poor cleaning attempt or somehow some sort of liquid got onto the sensor.

reason i haven't updated this post is that canon still has my camera.
When they looked at it they said it may just need a clean but wanted to inspect further.

Going back through my pictures those markings have been there sinse day 1, were just harder to notice on pictures full of colour.
Anything bellow f11 they didn't show up either.

As soon as i get it back from canon i shall let you all know what the outcome was. They told me it would be around 10 days, which is tomorrow, but not holding my beath

Let us know what it was. I’m guessing a hair but it is a very strange shadow.

Just got back from picking up my 40D
didn't get to speak to the tech but they have replaced the sensor so obviously it wasn't just a clean.

The work they carried out is as follows
replace CMOS sensor
recalibrate
cleaned mirror box and image sensor

it seems they also put the latest firmware into it as mine was 1.0.3 and and now it is 1.0.5

but they stuffed up my file numbering system. Last photo i took was 1365 it is now 9935
I know i can re-set it, but i liked having it continuous to know how many actual shots i had taken
