Exposure Compensation Problem on 30D

I just noticed when I change the exposure compensation to say -2 when the shutter button or the metering/exposure button is pressed it goes back to +/- 0...didn't think much of that until I start seeing everything was blown out and when i checked the Exif on the pics everything was still +/- 0.

The odd thing is with my 550ex attached the flash compensation registered correctly yet the body e.c. didnt.

Am I missing anything here? Trouble is I can't consult my instruction book because I'm not in my home country :D

Thanks,
Matt

Which "on" position do you have the camera on when you make the exposure compensation adjustments? I don't have my 30D in front of me now, but I believe you have to have the on switch set on the second "on" position - the one that looks like a line (/) leading to the dial.

Alice,

Your are exactly right, in fact I cannot make exposure compensation adjustments any other way. Using the "main control dial" on mine moves the shutter (or aperture) but will not alter the EV value of the shot.

Ah yes, even with it switched to the second dial setting. But like it said, the diagram indicates it has moved plus or minus in the e.c. but when the picture is taken it does not take the e.c. into account.

Do you see the compensation go back to 0 or does it just seem like it from the pics? Very odd either way...

In the category of "make sure it's plugged in":

A number of people get confused and adjust the flash exposure compensation instead of EC. Do not press any buttons on the top of the camera. Have the power switch turned to the line past "on", half-press the shutter, and spin the rear dial. Repeat: do not press the "lightning bolt +/-" button on the top of the camera. That's FEC, not EC. The lightning bolt means "flash". The button for normal EC is the shutter button (half-press).

Thanks, that did the trick. Is the FEC on the camera any different to the one on the physical 550ex unit...or just a shortcut to the 550ex controls. Or does it just adjust the inbuilt flash controls?

Thanks
