So I was scoping used 20D's on eBay the other day and came across one that looked like a good deal (at the time i started watching it). i thought "man, if that finishes up for under 1100 bucks then someone is getting a good deal. then i saw that the auction ended. HOLY CRAP...someone WAYYYYYYYYY overpaid!!!!! wonder if i should send that guy a message? oh well. check it out and look at the finishing price! This should be a reminder...Be VIGILANT when looking for a deal on eBay and dont get caught up in the bidding rush!

This is a scam. Happens often. The winner then sends a fake money order for even larger amount and asks the seller to return the difference. Later the seller's bank determines that the money order is fake. As a result the seller is out the goods and money.

If you have a look at the details, there is a lot more than just the camera in that auction - an 85mm f/1.8 and a 50mm f/1.8 and a grip with 2 batteries, 4Gb of CF cards also - i can't translate the final price but perhaps it's not as bad. but if i was the final bidder i'd be mad as hell that I was pushed so high by a NARU - and would suspect the seller of shilling. i'd take a neg on that one, and refuse to pay.

the one time i got shilled it was blatantly obvious and ebay said they'd look into it and then told me it was regular and I had to pay. fortunately it was just for a used DVD so small money. I was still mad tho, and it is clear that ebay just wants people to pay the higher prices because they get a higher commision. I only buy 'Buy it now' items from established sellers now - I won't bid any more - i'm not up for the competitive 'red mist' thing that comes over me..

LOl. I bought a Canon off-shoe ETTL cord for $31 including P&P. Bidding had stopped at $25.50 so I waited until the last 30 seconds before adding an extra 50 cents. It works - sets the flash off but I notice the head doesn't zoom.

I use a bidding engine with my researched max bid that goes in on the last 7 seconds. I got a 20D body for $700.00 last year then picked up 2-Tamron lenses for around $200.00 then I went to China town in San Francisco and was talking to a Camera shop owner, he sold me a complete 20D with Kit lens for $650.00 (the next day he told me he screwed up and had sold it for $200 under what he paid for it.) Anyway, right now anything over $600.00 for a 20D with Kit lens is over priced in my opinion.

Never do hot bidding, to easy to get caught up in the "I have to bid more to win" use a bid engine like www.esnipe.com (external link).

Oh. I know I'm not going to pay more than X. I set my limit at $20 then it went up to $25 so I thought I'd give it another shot with a $1 bid in the last 30 seconds and was very surprised to win.

I haven't got the patience to sit and watch an auction end - life is too short and it would cut into my POTN time too much!

If I want something I generally buy new from a reputable seller if online, or a brick and mortar where I can go and hassle a real person if there are any issues.

I have had bad luck with ebay bargains, fortunately all low value items. I've had more luck as a seller, by strictly following the rules.

If I was the so-called winner of that auction, I wouldn't pay a bean - the NARU'd bidder shoved the price way up - and I am sure it was a shilling scam -but what the guy thought he was doing entering such a high bid is beyond me! Probably thought it was a cunning way to win the auction.
