Be careful of disreputable vendors. If it us much cheaper than B & H, your name may change to your user ID without the m.

Is that for a used body? Because if that's a new price, I would suggest that it's either stolen, from a bait and switch outfit, or for one of those places that will charge you extra for the lens cap, strap, battery and cardboard box that it came in.

In other words this sounds too good to be true. What is the name of the company? And how to they check out on ressellersratings.com?

yes, run!!

seriously people, would you believe a guy that tells you that he has a brand new BMW M5 that is willing to sell for $10? you would think that with all the scams that have been going on for the past 5 years, people would implement the rule of "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is..". 2 days ago we had a guy that asked about buying a 1DmkIIn for $450 which is a 1/5 of the real price. the price you are asking about is 1/2 of the real price which is more than enough to turn on all the warning signs that you need.

DON'T buy it unless the "owner" can show you a B&H receipt with his/her name on it. That way you will be safe.

A receipt from B&H for a camera should show the serial number on it.

Well, the fact that it's used explains the low price although that does sound awfully cheap. What reason does he give for selling it? Did he offer any explanation as to how he came up with the price? It doesn't hurt to ask.

You could drop in as you suggest and take a look at it. Jot down the SN and then contact the Peterborough Police to see if they maintain any sort of database on stolen goods.

he says he hasn't registered it yet, so the warranty should still be good (?) if i was to get it?
yes, i know 'if it sounds too good to be true...." but this i THINK is a private sale. i emailed him asking why he is selling. still waiting on a reply. now if it is stolen, i may have a problem registering it and warranty work if req'd.?

i'll ask to see the receipt, good idea.

The warranty is still good if he has a receipt and it hasn't been one year since he bought it.

this is the ad, with pictures on the site.

Location: Peterborough
Date Listed: 01-Nov-07

Canon EOS 5D 12.8MP SLR Digital Camera Body that comes with original box, all manuals, cd's, charger and cables (everything it originaly came with). I havent registered the camera with canon so the warranty should be available. Also Im including Kirk Enterprises Quick release plate ($55.00 value) designed just for Canon 5d, Dot Line cable release ($39.95 value), and Canon Ee-D Grid type Focusing screen ($34.95 value). I bought the camera a year ago from B&H Photo Video, the shutter has only 2598 actuations while its rated for 150000, so its practically new. Cosmeticaly I would rate 8+, since it has several tiny blemishes on the body.

How did you find out about it? I've seen quite a few 5D's posted on buy-n-sell type web sites here in Canada and there are a lot of them for in the $700-$900 range.

I've sent off a "how old is it- and is it under warranty" emails to all of them and only one responded back and referred me to a website in china.

I still remember the old urban myth about the guy who answered the ad for the "old ford" in the womans basement that belonged to her deceased husband and she would sell it for $100 to take it away. And when the guy went there it was a mint-68 mustang.

I think all of us want to find that "little old lady" who's selling her deceased husbands photo gear.
