I just picked up a used 5d, and 24-105 with extra battery for 2600 on this forum (thanks aaronlam). So far I LOVE it. Coming from the 400d, the viewfinder is so much nicer, the dof shallower, and the noise pattern is a lot finer and more pleasant. I think 24-105 is an underrated lens. I have the 17-55 on the 400d, but I will most likely sell it. I will probably keep the 400D as a back up, and pair it up with a long lens on trips, so I wont have to do all the lens swapping.
I now also love my tamy 28-75 on the 5d. Its a phenom portrait lens. wickedly sharp.

could you post some shots (5D and Tamron 28-75)?

the original is sharper, as this was resized by flicker during upload.

When you sell your 17-55 use some of the money to get an 85 1.8 for portaits it blows the Tamy 28-75 out of the water.

now the worst part of ordering new hardware- THE WAIT!!!!

I hear you there. That is why I usually end up taking some of the money I saved via rebates, discounts or whatever and put them towards expedited shipping!
Nothing is worse than doing that and then getting home from work to realize that the UPS or whoever stopped by and left you a nice little post it note thing saying that they will come tomorrow because no one was home!

Amazon.com got me with that a bunch of times when I ordered camera stuff!

As much as people don't like Ken around here. He's on to something.

Congrats! I used a 5D for a couple of years before moving up to a 1D. Great camera.
I'll have a 1D MKIII for sale soon, once the 1Ds comes in...

On a similar note - I picked up an 85 1.2L II last spring. While at first this lens takes some getting used to,
once you groove with it - portraits are amazing! Rent one for a week and try it out!

Mike

I already have the 85 1.8! I agree that its a very good lens. If I had to pick between the two, 28-75 would me my choice hands down. The 85 has a fair bit of PF, specially wide open. I also love the versatility of zoom. As for sharpness goes, 28-75 is referred to as the "mean lens" by my wife, and she now refuses to let me take pictures of her with that lens, as it shows too many skin imperfections. Maybe I got lucky, but I really like that lens.

The 85 1.2L is being shipped to me as we speak -- what about the lens "takes some getting used to?"

Thanks!

I finally took the plunge on the 5D as well. The 40D was just not doing it for me. Like many others it seems the IQ and sharpness of the 40D is a problem. Even after calibration it's just not there. The first 10 photos I took with my 5D last night completely blew me away and better than the few 1000 I have shot with my 40D using the same lenses.

Now I have to find what to do with my 40D. It's too late for money back on that.
