I know my Ls would be more forgiving on people for portraits. The Zeiss is just unforgiving. But, it might be possible to manipulate the zeiss...like maybe with softar filters and low contrast filters. Schneider makes a black frost filter that might take off some of the unpleasing contrast on people's skin http://www.schneideroptics.com …ail.aspx?CID=109&IID=3081 (external link)

I dunno...I've still got to experiment. I don't feel 100% with these lenses just yet. Still need to get to know them a bit better. But I'm definately happy with their sharpness and color accuracy.

thanks for the input unity gain, i was thinking of using the 135mm for some portraits, i think it would work pretty well with people... i dunno though.

It is good for portraits. Stick it on a tripod with a remote and you will get some very natural shots.

I've been playing with mf lenses for a while now, and really enjoy using them. Bargain price with some very nice IQ is always a bonus :D

These are taken on an Eos1n with a Carl Zeiss Jena 180mm 2.8. The viewfinder on the 1n is pretty big and makes manual focus a piece of cake. My 20d/40d are ok to, but the smaller viewfinder does make critical focusing a little harder. I've ordred the manual focus optimised screen for the 40d, I'll be interested to see what difference it makes.

I have a Zeiss fixed 35mm T* Sonnar on my (film) Contax T3, and it is one the sharpest lenses I have ever used.

The only two lenses that I own right now are both Zeiss, and I don't see myself straying away from the manual focus option.

Given the small viewfinder of the 350D, I use adapters with focus confirm chips, and they've worked reasonably well. For candid shots, I'll often use a preset focus or quickly adjust the focus using the depth-of-field scale.

what focus confirm chips are you using? Where did you get them from?

Thanks...I'd like to pick one up and give it a try. So far, I haven't felt like it was needed...but the situation could arise in the future.
