How many did you get like the one above?

All of them from that perspective and Av - a total of around a dozen or so.

That's too many for a random miss focus. That back-focus is fairly dramatic and appears worse than I get with my lens.
The lens is very useful to me so I just avoid f/2-4 on close-ups. You can also try using the minor (non f/2.8) AF points in these instances. Mine seems to shift less using those AF points.

That is my experience also.

What are all those little black rectangles on her face? And what does the red one mean?

They replicate where the AF points lie on a late model 1-series DSLR. The red one is the active point.

So maybe i can conclude something like this :
50mm 1,2 is a great lens - sharp - great color and contrast.
Well built.
everything ok - as long as I keep clear of the f2-f4 within 3-4 feet range ?
f1,2 til f 1,8/2 is ok - ? within that range ? 3-4 feet ?

You've got it, generally, I think.
Many have reported a gradual backfocus deterioration as the lens is stopped down. The backfocus perhaps peaks around f/2.8, then it starts to get swamped by the increase in DoF.

However, not all lens copies behave in the identical way, and some owners report no backfocus observed.

All this really means that you should get the lens when you are ready for it, with a return option for sure, give it a spin and see how you like it.

I cant get the 50L out of my wifes hands. she uses it a lot but shes also at F/2.0 and above alot.....you start getting down to 1.2-1.8... pretty dam shallow so you better have some shutter speed and be close enough to make things work right. I dont see how people can take a head and shoulders at F/1.2--1.6 and not expect front focus problems. Yes theres exceptions and you can get a few but your gonna get a ton of misses.

The 85L,,Im rarely below 1.8 with it. I think the only prime you can count on for being dead bang on at F/2.o is the 135 and the 200L. If im shooting the 50L at 1.6, im filling the entire frame so im right on top of things. You have to have reasonable expectations and a little understanding of distance to subject when its that shallow.
