For those of you who are not aware of this, Microsoft has an image file viewer for Windows XP, similar to the Picture and Fax Viewer, that will open Canon .cr2 raw files, as well as other image files.
you may downlead it from here (external link) on the Microsoft web site.

Be aware of the following when you install it:

It requires validation of your copy of Windows XP. If you have a pirated copy, don't even think of trying to install it.

It has a large installer! On my system, it installed perfectly. However, I started the install, answered the usual questions, and then it appeared to go away for well over a minute, with no open windows and no messages. When it came back, it was all done, and only clicking "Finish" remained.

My suggestions:

When you first go to the website, download, print, and read the White Paper.

When the program install is done, print and read the readme file.

Enjoy.

Roger

If you want to see raw files on xp you can download Raw Codec 1.1, or for vista Raw codec 1.2, these codes will let you see raw files in windows picture and fax/Windows Gallery...

I used to use this when I had my Rebel XT. Did not work with XTi and does not work with the 40D.

Well, you know, it helps to read.

It does give a list of the file formats it supports. The 20D and XT are among them, but the 40D and XTi are not.

And, as one might conceivable guess from my forum name, we have a 20D.

That's all I can find... I can find the Canon Raw Codec for Vista all day long, but can't seem to find the older version for XP. Will the Vista version work?

Juts FYI for any other paranoia sufferers out there,.

This install requires that the MS ".net framework" be installed.
In addition to that hefty install, which can alter quite a bit of your OS, the actual tool only takes up approx 1/5 of the file size you must download..
The other 4/5ths is unknown MS meddling into your system.

When I installed it the first time on a test system ( mind you this was several years ago on an XP box, and back when next to no one had this ".net framework" installed yet ) the non MS firewall went nuts both during the process, (the validation aspect we assume) and then afterwards, as the RAW viewer attempted to "phone home" with the data it was collecting from my machine.

I don't know what the attempt to connect was about in this case. I saw simlar activity the first time I tried to install Googles "Picassa"
In the case of Picassa, the deduction was more clear. In Googles desire to log and database EVERYTHING, they are using the free utility to log every image on every PC the utility is installed on.

I can't swear that MS is up to the same tricks, but..

The Paranoid in me says steer clear of this one too.

I'm looking at the download, and the size this time is only 5.8MB. which is the size of the actual app,. when I downloaded it two to three years ago, it was a total download of over 40MB! (47.7 to be exact, I still have the install file from June 2005 )

So perhaps this is now just the app and none of the monkee business after all.

Probably because the .Net framework is bundled with Vista, so there's no reason to download it again?

That's probably part of it, at the time .net was only 19.7MB, so that still leaves over 10MB as "mystery stuff" from MS.
