If you're shooting .jpg and don't want to post process why not just crank up the in camera sharpening and maybe contrast and see if you get results you're happy with?

the images should be sharper than this without any post processing though, that is my point. it is like they are starting out less sharp than the default. i dont mind post processing, but my point is, i shouldnt have to be dealing with this much blurriness straight out of camera.

It is very hard to judge how sharp a .jpg should be without any post processing, because the camera is processing it to some degree, and every camera is different.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you turned the sharpening all the way down on your 40D, but never touched the default sharpening on your 20D. So, either try cranking it up in the camera, or fire up the USM in post. You might like the result.

Doesn’t matter.
Shooting with f/10 or f/14 means nothing for the focus test, it’s impossible to draw any conclusion from these shots..

Links work on YOUR computer, because it reads them from your browser cache, most likely..
About testing focus, let me repeat myself:

Read instructions on this site and do EXACTLY as it says.
Read instruction manual if you don’t know how to set your camera to do what it takes..

Ok, I see them now,

they're underexposed (unless you printed them on gray paper)

They work for me now. Guess the server got itself sorted out.

Looks like about 6mm front focusing, but nothing is really sharp.

Still, as others have advised, you can't compare the 40D with no in-camera sharpening to a 20D which may have sharpening as the camera's default...

You have to set it to timer. Or else it's waiting for you to press the shutter again to trip the exposure.

To the OP , er.. I thought I made that clear???

Okay, they work now..
I’d agree with number six, there is about 6mm front focusing which could explain focusing error in initial two shots.
I’d repeat the test with another lens, wide open, and closed one stop from the maximum, just to make sure..

Your camera/lens may be out of whack, but until you have checked everything else you can know.

What settings exactly did your 20D have ?

Those tests look like you might have slight front focussing

take some more real life test shots with tripod and MLU and self timer but this time set it to include some sharpening, just to see what they look like;)
