I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about sigma lenses on a canon lens forum but it won't hurt to try.

From what I've heard, Sigma lenses have both good and bad copies? Is this true? If it is true, how bad is a bad copy? I'm planning on getting a second hand Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 to compliment my 350D kitlens.

Thanks in advance for your help.I will surely appreciate it.

All brands have the potential for good and bad copies. If it is the lens you want and the price is right, buy it. Take pix with it and if they look good to you, you are done.

Don't worry about talking about Sigma lenses (or any other make) around here, a lot of people use them and are very happy with them - myself included.
Someone even mentiond the word 'Nik*n' once but they banned him (Only kidding :-) )

From my experience of owning a 70-200 f/2.8 I would say the build quality of the 'EX' range is very good, but some of the cheaper models are not so 'robust', but this equally applies to some of the lower end Canon ones as well.

I do get the impression that maybe Sigma's quality control isn't as good as it could be, a few people do report various front/back focus issues with them, but then again, you get this with some Canons...

Sigmas aren't any good. I sure wouldn't buy one.

The sharpest lens I have is the Sigma 150 macro, with the 85 and 200 right behind. I've sold four lenses, three of them Canons (including the 17-40L) and a Sigma 17-70. The Sigma is the only one I regret letting go.

I have no aversion to Canon lenses, it's just that for a crop camera user, Sigma has a nice line up of lenses for us.

I'd recommend getting a Sigma 7-300 f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro rather than the 55-200 - it has better image quality, a longer zoom range, and you rarely ever need the 20mm left out.

Looking at that gear lineup makes me wonder if Sigma sponsors this guy?

Well, if they did, I'd have one of these (external link) in my bag (cart?).

Yeah. Have to agree. The Sigma 70-300 APO DG is a steal. You won't find many people telling you different. It is a very good second lens to the kit lens. If you are looking for a third lens then for the money go with the Canon 50mm f1.8. Excellent again. Search this forum and you'll see what I mean.

I have been getting some good photo's from the Sigma 17-70 (Thanks Grinchy). Although I have the canon 50 and 85 f1.8 (no brainer) my next lens is looking like the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX whatever. I would love the 120-300 f2.8 but I can't afford it. I have no complaints so far about Sigma.

The Sigma 55-200mm is a fine starter telephoto zoom. Its small, light, unobtrusive and fairly sharp. Don't worry too much about "bad copies" although, since its used, I'd recommend trying out the lens before buying if you can.
