Rio is such a vibrant/colorful city. burntpixel wrote in post #4248104 lots of noise on my end. a longer shutter speed would have produced streaking head and tail lights. which imho would have added to the image. Yup, agree & I did some pp which is why there's noise.

I'm heading down next week. This will be my sixth trip; however, it will be my first trip with an SLR. I'm planning on limiting my camera use in the city to specific locations and going straight from the apartment, to the shoot, and then straight back via taxi. Any tips for keeping the camera safe? I have a low key bag and plan to cover the Canon logo on all my gear with black electrical tape. I'm also going to take out an itemized insurance policy on my gear, back up my cards frequently, and be ready to hand over my gear w/o hesitation if the time comes. Robert McCadden

Nov 04, 2007 13:07 | #7 doidinho wrote in post #4249113 .... Any tips for keeping the camera safe?.. We were "lucky" as our cameras were P&S but if I were to bring a DSLR, a non-camera looking bag for eg: Crumpler will be my choice. Obviously this safety aspect applies to any major cities that we are visting & insurance is a great idea. doidinho wrote in post #4249113 ...If you have any other ideas of good spots let me know.... We been to most of the places you mentioned & they all have great photo shoot opportunities. I found dusk & dawn are the best time for the shots ie: I like the warm of the sun during these times. Here's a few more of Rio taken using P&S...

We stayed with family who were out there working in the oil business. A really bad place for robberies is the area heading out of RIO - to the right of Ipanema, there is a big underpass there and quite a few big hotels the other side of the underpass - apparently theives wait there for likely looking targets. The problem is, that however much you try not to look like a tourist you just... do! My father in law lost his DSLR in an armed mugging, was stupid enough to fight back and got thumped with a gun barrel for his trouble - he managed to get a replacement camera, and then got that taken later in the trip - not the safest place in the world! Oh, and don't stop off at the car park half way up sugar loaf, it is a real black spot! We heard all the horror stories from our cousin but never encountered much ourselves...

I agree with the safety question in RIO or for the matter any major cities where there's plenty of tourist. As mentioned, we were lucky during our stay in RIO as we had a local guide to take us around ie: he was able to point out the "troubled" spots.

My luggage would be cut by almost half (I don't have a lot of equiptment, I just travel light) and I wouldn't have to deal with the tripod (I could just use my gorillapod). Robert McCadden

Get some good insurance, making sure it covers you for all sorts of theft, and enjoy it - not much use having a fab camera and leaving it at home when you go somewhere spectacular! Jackie

Flyingavanti Member 31 posts Likes: 1 Joined Jun 2007 More info | I am not a photographer, but you may like the "Then and Now" pictures we took on a 2 year trip to South America... The following picture is from Hiram Bingham's book, "Across South America", written in 1911. You may recognize Hiram Bingham's name, as he is the person that discovered Machu Picchu, in Peru, during the adventure written about in this book. And in 2007! You can see that on the left side of Sugar Loaf (the area is called Urca), most of the land was created since 1911! In 1916 J.A. Zahm published a booked called "Through South America's Southland". Corcovado has been recently restored and the walkway pictured below has been widened. I would guess that it is now nearly twice as wide as it was back in 1916! And it appears that it is 20 times as busy! From the book "South America Lights and Shadows", by Kasimir Edwards (1932). By 1932 most of the land fill (Urca), to the left of Sugar Loaf, was complete. Many more boats in the harbor....In Got it finally --- Canon 30d --- 70mm - 200mm F2.8L IS --- 24mm - 70mm 2.8L --- and a 10mm - 22mm Wide Angle

Nov 05, 2007 12:55 | #15 Thanks for sharing & nice pics. BTW, when in Rio & for the Artist at heart you may want to pay a visit to Santa Teresa Mosaic Stairs. You were likely meet Artist Jorge Selaron who spends his time creating his work of Art. Here's some pics of his paintings with images of pregnant women.
