lots of noise on my end.

a longer shutter speed would have produced streaking head and tail lights. which imho would have added to the image.

Thanks & how I wish I had a DSLR instead of P&S then. Rio is such a vibrant/colorful city.

Nice shots, would like to see more if you have any. I'm heading down next week. This will be my sixth trip; however, it will be my first trip with an SLR. I'm planning on limiting my camera use in the city to specific locations and going straight from the apartment, to the shoot, and then straight back via taxi. Any tips for keeping the camera safe? I have a low key bag and plan to cover the Canon logo on all my gear with black electrical tape. I'm also going to take out an itemized insurance policy on my gear, back up my cards frequently, and be ready to hand over my gear w/o hesitation if the time comes.

Places I would like to shoot include the Crist, sugarloaf, the hippy fair, the museum of modern art, Ipanema Beach, Lagoa, the fishermen at Leme beach. If you have any other ideas of good spots let me know.

.... Any tips for keeping the camera safe?..

We were "lucky" as our cameras were P&S but if I were to bring a DSLR, a non-camera looking bag for eg: Crumpler will be my choice. Obviously this safety aspect applies to any major cities that we are visting & insurance is a great idea.

We been to most of the places you mentioned & they all have great photo shoot opportunities. I found dusk & dawn are the best time for the shots ie: I like the warm of the sun during these times. Here's a few more of Rio taken using P&S...

Hi, having visited Rio a few years ago I would just say - be REALLY careful and have good insurance! We stayed with family who were out there working in the oil business. A really bad place for robberies is the area heading out of RIO - to the right of Ipanema, there is a big underpass there and quite a few big hotels the other side of the underpass - apparently theives wait there for likely looking targets. The problem is, that however much you try not to look like a tourist you just... do! My father in law lost his DSLR in an armed mugging, was stupid enough to fight back and got thumped with a gun barrel for his trouble - he managed to get a replacement camera, and then got that taken later in the trip - not the safest place in the world! Oh, and don't stop off at the car park half way up sugar loaf, it is a real black spot! We heard all the horror stories from our cousin but never encountered much ourselves...

Despite all that .... have a wonderful trip - and be sure to visit Porcao Restaurant - not if you are a veggie though...as they will ply you with fillet steak until you beg them to stop... and the Bar Garotta de Ipanema - where the famous song was written -= great food and ambience, and of course CAIPARENA's (available everywhere) but don't have more than a couple!!! Oh, and there are lots of opportunities for some great photos too... ENJOY Jackie X

I agree with the safety question in RIO or for the matter any major cities where there's plenty of tourist. As mentioned, we were lucky during our stay in RIO as we had a local guide to take us around ie: he was able to point out the "troubled" spots.
Apart from this, RIO is one fun city!

Perhaps this is a good reason to buy a G-9? My luggage would be cut by almost half (I don't have a lot of equiptment, I just travel light) and I wouldn't have to deal with the tripod (I could just use my gorillapod).

If I bring the tripod that means I need to bring a third piece of luggage and check it.

My wife just to Rio a couple of days ago and she said someone went through her luggage stol a couple items.

The trouble is, you would be SO frustrated not to have your gear with you - every wonderful thing you saw you would be reaching for your dlsr! Get some good insurance, making sure it covers you for all sorts of theft, and enjoy it - not much use having a fab camera and leaving it at home when you go somewhere spectacular! Jackie

I am not a photographer, but you may like the "Then and Now" pictures we took on a 2 year trip to South America...

http://www.ploung.com/brazil_13.htm (external link)

Here are a few examples.....

The following pictures were all taken from the top of Corcovado, in Rio de Janeiro. The old photos are from 1907, 1911, 1916, 1932, 1939, 1940, 1942, 1943, 1949 and 1978. I hope they do not bore you too much.
If so, you can scroll to the next part of the adventure -- Sandy and I hang glide for the first time ever!

The first picture taken from the top of Corcovado is from 1907. It is from the book called "Continent of Opportunity", by Francis Clark.

IMAGE: http://www.ploung.com/Brazil%20Rio%20de%20Janeiro%20FC%201907%20Continent%20Of%20Opprotunity%20Francis%20Clark%20240.jpg
And the following picture is almost a duplicate of the picture above. Between the 1907 and 1911 photo there was not a lot of growth in Rio de Janeiro.
The following picture is from Hiram Bingham's book, "Across South America", written in 1911. You may recognize Hiram Bingham's name, as he is the person that discovered Machu Picchu, in Peru, during the adventure written about in this book.
IMAGE: http://www.ploung.com/Brazil%20Rio%20de%20Janeiro%20FC%201911%20Across%20South%20America%20Hiram%20Bingham%20Front%20Piece.jpg
And in 2007!
You can see that on the left side of Sugar Loaf (the area is called Urca), most of the land was created since 1911!
IMAGE: http://www.ploung.com/IMG_3504BW.JPG
In 1916 J.A. Zahm published a booked called "Through South America's Southland". Corcovado has been recently restored and the walkway pictured below has been widened. I would guess that it is now nearly twice as wide as it was back in 1916! And it appears that it is 20 times as busy!
IMAGE: http://www.ploung.com/Brazil%20Rio%20de%20Janeiro%20FC%201916%20Through%20South%20Americas%20Southland%20JA%20Zahm%2074.jpg
IMAGE: http://www.ploung.com/IMG_3523TNBW.JPG

From the book "South America Lights and Shadows", by Kasimir Edwards (1932).

By 1932 most of the land fill (Urca), to the left of Sugar Loaf, was complete.

This is a "Then and Now" from Cordoba, Argentina......

IMAGE: http://www.ploung.com/Argentina%20Cordova%20Churches%20From%20Cathedral%20Roof%201940%20East%20Coast%20of%20South%20America%20Sydney%20Clark%20238.jpg
IMAGE: http://www.ploung.com/IMG_1832a.JPG
This was one of my favorite "Then and Now's", for many reasons. The challenge to gain access to the roof top of the Cathedral, and the chance to stand 60 feet above ground level, in the exact location of a man I really admire (Sidney Clark, a travel writer from the first half of the 1900's). And the photograph is within inches of the old picture. If you look closely at the lower small spire of the church I am standing on, the tip of said spire is centered in the round window of the church in the background, just like the old picture above. Everything fell into perfect alignment.

Sorry - all the pictures were taken with a point and shoot... bought the nicer camera when I returned from the trip.

Got it finally --- Canon 30d --- 70mm - 200mm F2.8L IS --- 24mm - 70mm 2.8L --- and a 10mm - 22mm Wide Angle :) (and SD500 & S3)

Thanks for sharing & nice pics. BTW, when in Rio & for the Artist at heart you may want to pay a visit to Santa Teresa Mosaic Stairs. You were likely meet Artist Jorge Selaron who spends his time creating his work of Art. Here's some pics of his paintings with images of pregnant women.
