I have a CF card that will not be read by the card reader in my computer and when inserted into my camera I get an error message "err CF."

This happened after i took my CF card to Costco to make prints.

Fortunately I only lost about 20 pictures or so. My question is can I somehow get what's on the disc back? Is the card shot? Should I not use it anymore?

When I look at it on my computer it shows the card as full but won't list the items on it?

Any help is appreciated.

Try some volume recovery software on the mounted card volume. In the Mac world, I'd recommend Disk Warrior. PC World - dunno.

Once you succeed or give up, reformat the card in the camera and see how it goes. It could be a one-off glitch, or it could be knackered.

It could be so many thing from a corrupted file to a fried card. You might try a disk scan on the card first to see if it can identify an error assuming that at least the PC sees the card in the first place. Or you can try to format the then use some recovery software to get the pictures back. The undamaged ones will usually get recovered and the damaged ones not.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Sandisk Rescue Pro or Lexar Image Rescue are 2 good programs for recovering images from a CF card, save my butt a couples years ago when I was shooting a PGA event, put the CF card in and nothing was showing on the card I used Rescue Pro and was able to retrieve the photos.

Thanks guys! I will try the Sandisk product. What causes these corruptions? Any idea?

It's "highly likely" to be some kind of file corruption, and that, after trying recovery software, wiping it clean with your computer and reformatting in the camera will get it back up and running...

That being said, buy a new card, and only use this one as a last-ditch backup!

Exactly what I would say. Chances are it was just some purely random glitch, but to be safe, Id get it working again and then hold on to it for purely last ditch efforts.
