Wouldn't it be easier to leave it on and use the lens like this? You let the weight rest on the palm of your hand, and then you'll have your fingers free to use the zoomring.

Always off. I rarely use a tripod and it just gets in the way when shooting handheld.

The correct answer for me is I usually leave it on, but if I am doing a fashion show or other 2 to 4 hour event where I will be all handheld, then I take it off, but otherwise it is more hassle then it is worth to take it off and put it back on.

I leave it on. I sometimes use the tripod ring to steady the lens and I use it sometimes to carry the camera/lens combo. I also don't want to have to go looking for the tripod ring on the rare occasion when I mount this lens on a tripod/monopod.

I leave mine on.
For me, it actually helps me to hand hold the camera/lens.

Same reason I leave it. Although it is on the tripod most of the time anyway.

Well, precisely, I have tried this configuration, but for me it does not feel comfortable, and actually feels less stable than when my palm is directly beneath the lens, surrounding it with my fingers. Maybe I am just weird.

My tripod ring is always on during storage; I just take it off when we get on location for a shoot, and then it remains in my backpack. The time to dig it out of there and mount it on the lens (which of course must come off the camera first) is painless. I haven't had to rush setting up on a tripod. besides, shots that require a tripod usually also require time and patience (at least in my experience).

Apologies to hijack this thread slightly, but does anybody have pictures of the proper way to 'grip' the tripod mount when hand-holding? Just to compare with the above-quoted picture of the hand-held pose.

I've only ever seen the lens in person, never mounted or held-to feel how unwieldy it might ever be. Everybody tells me the 70-200 2.8's (canon, sigma or otherwise) are friggin' monsters so I wanted to gauge for myself how realistic it would be to either handhold , tripod, or use that 'hand-grip (external link)' I see on the sigma.

There's not really a "proper" way as such, just what is comfortable to you and gives you a solid grip, but I use the exact technique as the above poster personally.

I always leave the tripod ring off when I'm handholding. I found it is more of an irritation when left on and why carry the extra weight if you don't need to?
