Now that I am shooting RAW with my 40D and processing in DPP what´s the best sharpen stratagy: use some degree of in camera sharpening or do it all in DPP and/or PS USM? I have read below that many do a little sharpening in DPP then more with USM so the question really just deals with in camera sharpness setting.

In-camera sharpening does not affect the Raw data. It only affects the JPEG preview that is embedded into the Raw file, which is what you see on the camera's LCD.

The in-camera sharpening setting is used by DPP as its initial sharpening value, but you can easily select a different sharpening setting in DPP.

Yup, what Doug said. But turning up the sharpness in camera does help as the previews on the LCD are a bit sharper.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

It's really a matter of preference, but I'd much rather do it in post where I have control of the final outcome.

I guess at the end of the day you'll make up your own mind, but to be honest if you are using DPP (which is how I view my raw images to decide if I'm going to bother with any further PP) then I can't imagine a time when I would want to use less than Sharpness setting 3.

I've set the custom picture style on my 40D to "Neutral", but then increased the sharpness to 3, so that when it transfers to DPP I don't need to be adjusting that. I then rarely need to use USM in photoshop.
