Hi All,

I haven't been working with Raw files long, and my experience with Adobe Lightroom is only a week or so long.

I have a several thousand pictures for which I would like to update the Metada to have the copyright symbol and my name included.

Can I just update this one item in all my files without messing up the the Metadata info such as date taken, digitised, changed, shooting info etc? Will lightroom do this for me, or do I need something else?

Thanks,
~Dom

P.S. I've searched through the forums but haven't found an answer to this question.

Dom,

You can enter metadata for one pic in the Metadata window while in the Library Module. Once you've done this you can go to Metadata/Copy Metadata... and select what metadata you want to copy, then select the pictures you want to copy to -- if you want to add that metadata to all pics in your library, go to the Library window and select All Pictures, then Edit/Select All. Then Metadata/Paste Metadata should do the trick!

Keywords have other tricks, such as the Keyword Paintbrush tool which give them some extra tools.

If you have metatdata you want to automatically apply to all pics you import into Lightroom, a handy feature, then the next time you do an Import, go to the Apply metadata to photos section, bring up the list of options, choose New, and fill in the metadata you want to apply to all imports (such as Author and copyright info), then save it as a Preset. After that, your Import dialoague will automatically show that preset (unless you switch to another setting) and apply the metadata.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Tony,

I really like the import Metadata tip. Thanks!

I basically have a whole bunch of pictures without my name as the creator. My big fear is that if I change the Creator name on one file and apply it to others, that not only will the creator info change on the other files but also the exposure and other EXIF info as well.

Lightroom stores the added metadata external to the file (similar to keywords) so you don't need to worry about the image EXIF. Check out Lightroom Help for more info on metadata -- it'll include the steps I've mentioned. When you export a file, depending on the nature of the export, LR will imbed metadata in, say, a jpeg or DNG, but it won't overwrite the original image info.
