Canon is not the only "good" camera out there -- most up-to-date cameras deliver great pics under most circumstances.
When you're talking DSLRs, though, you are looking at not just a camera, but a whole system -- lenses and accessories that will help you to get great pictures every time. And, you look for a body within a system that will deliver great performance.
Is one system "better" than the others? Well, duhh, everyone in this forum knows that Canon is the best
! But seriously, you can beat your brains out trying to compare. Read, get a feel. I Read a lot and ended up choosing Canon for various reasons. If I had chosen Nikon or Sony or whatever, I'd be in another forum. The choice is yours, you have the power, and you have the technology!
