I've heard that the f/4 version of this lens is one of the sharpest Canon lenses out there, even wide open. Is it sharper than the 2.8 non-IS? How do they compare wide open/stopped down?

I have none of them yet, but the F4 it is shaper than the F2.8 . Except that the F4 can't do F2.8 ...;)

I find that they are both sharp as each other, the image stabiliser on my F2.8 even better in low light conditions. :)

The fact is that with f/4 the DOF is greater and
that give more lattitude when we focus.

So more pictures would appear to be sharper IMHO.

Good luck.

I'd say in general they're all pretty sharp. I've used the f/2.8, f/2.8 IS and f/4 IS and I settled with the f/4 IS. This lens is unbelievably sharp, and the 4-stop IS is simply awesome.

Yes I would love to have the IS, but most of my shooting involves fast movement and action so the extra stop on the 2.8 is more suited to my work than the IS (most of the time). And at the moment, I don't have the $ to plunk down for the 2.8 IS (even with the rebate), perhaps some day in the future I will upgrade to it though.

I just wanted to make sure I won't be loosing sharpness/IQ by trading in my f/4 for an f/2.8

Collin is right, all the Canon 70-200's are all fantastic lenses, and fantastically sharp. Stop worrying about it and get out and shoot! :D

The test reports and reviews I've seen indicate the f/2.8 is the sharper lens of the two...

I have both right now, I see no difference, but I try not to pixel-peep; it will just make me think less of my pictures. Plus, 95% of my customers are mom's... they don't pixel-peep, why should I? :D
