Challenge #96 - Anthropomorphism

Don't worry, I'll explain this long word. ;) According to Wikipedia (external link), "Anthropomorphism is the attribution of uniquely human characteristics and qualities to nonhuman beings, inanimate objects, or natural or supernatural phenomena."

While this definition can be applied to appearance only (a tree branch simply looking like an arm), for this challenge I'd prefer objects/animals showing an emotional side (a car that looks sad, an happy face in the bark of a tree or a cloud, a "smiling" pet, etc.). The subject can have obvious human facial features, or just physical traits in the shape of a feeling. The environment can complement the feeling, but must not be the sole element inducing the feeling (example, for loneliness, a tree in the middle of a field would only count if it physically looks alone, sad, etc).

Remember to give a title to your submission and write up your camera model!!! Any other info relating to your entry is fine and appreciated too. :D

Any questions, please don't be shy and shoot a PM.

Stoneface

Title: Stoneface
Camera: Canon S3IS

This is a rock formation near where I live. The face sure has a lot of character to it, in my opinion.

Thanks for those who participated. Here are the results. Sorry for the briefness of the comments, the lunchbreak is short!

Micky Daeus: Pondering the mysteries of life
This week's winner, but not by much. :D The koala really seem in deep thought, ressemblance to an human is striking. The title also fits very well the photo. From a technical standpoint, I liked the composition/angle, blured background and black & white conversion. I personally would have prefered a little bit more contrast, but it is still really good-looking how it is.

Edd S: Stoneface
While I liked the color/composition in this entry, at first I wasn't sure about the face. I saw it, but could't make out any emotion it showed. When I reviewed it for the final judgement, well, it seemed pissed at me for not being understood. A little bit ambiguous to me, hence the 2nd place, but still a nice character and good-looking photo.

teekay: Aimee Arbutustree, bellydancer
Not a face... I know. Still the bellydancer features are obvious, the photo has a sensual feel to it. The colors, composition and technicals (clarity, focus, etc) were what helped make it into the top-3.

Runner ups, by order of apperance:
BBoi
Hey fellow computer-modder. ;) Chrome doesn't look that easy to capture. The glitters (stars) sure do look very cool! The emotion is genuine anger, though it was man-made (not accidental). What made your entry lose a few points here are the various reflections of the room/surrounding objects. Maybe also try another kind of cropping? (the whole case, or just the face part but in landscape orientation).

Paul B
Nicely executed photo, good use of DOF, fine details, vibrant colors. Except the obvious chin, I couldn't make out any other parts of Jay Leno. I can however see a frog hiding in the shade. ;) Nothing wrong about the picture, really, just its relation to this week's topic.

thetarget
Welcome to the challenge! That was a funny face, I didn't expect any smileys in this contest (but now I'm surprised I didn't get more). Though the face wasn't detailed enough (by my expectations), the feeling was there. That was a good idea. I guess it's part of a car/shop window sticker?

GoHokiesGo
This face lacked some emotions, but it's a great face nonetheless. I liked the composition and colors. The water is blurry, but the cliff looks crisper (which balanced on my judging scale, weird. Were you using a tripod and a slower shutter speed?

Micky Daeus, here's the torch for the next challenge.

Thanks for the placing, and congratulations to the other two!

I didn't read the rules as needing a face, otherwise I might have submitted another of my tree photos.

Arbutus trees can be very sensual looking and I have some more shots which - as they say on TV - "might not be suitable for family viewing" ;)

Oh, a face wasn't required, though it's usually the easiest way to express feelings. My comment was more to explain my choice to the audience who could expect a face. :D You didn't lose any points for showing another part of human-looking anatomy. :)

Yeah this one was fun .. and yeah, chrome is awful to capture - I mean, how DO you capture a reflective surface, without reflecting anything in it ?You'll note that neither I, nor my camera are in the pic though because i used the timer, and the camera is positioned at the base level of the case.

Some excellent pics this time - I especially liked the rock face with the lumpy nose :)
