Had the chance to shoot an NHL game over the weekend. Unfortunately for we, the faithful fans of the Red Rising crew (a local Blackhawks ad campaign), the Hawks' goaltender, Nikolai Khabibulin, let in 3 of 6 first period shots and they never recovered, losing 5-2.

Here's a shot of the Hawks first goal as center Robert Lang (20) buries the puck past Predators goalie Chris Mason for his 6th goal of the season with left wing Tuomo Ruutu (15) looking on in the slot:

Predators center David Legwand (11) tussles with Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Dustin Byfuglien (52) :

These were mostly taken with a 70-200 f/2.8 . I wasn't planning on being able to shoot from behind the net so didn't take my 400. When one of those locations opened up, I slapped a 1.4X TC on the 70-200 to make do "in a pinch". Next time, I'll throw my 300 and maybe even my 400 in the car, just in case.

These shots are super. The red on the Hawks' jerseys just pops. Excellent.

1/640 @ f4 obviously stops the action....I'd have guessed it would have to be a faster shutter for NHL. Thanks for sharing.

Excuse what could be a stupid question, but i'm new to Hockey shooting and i'm in wonder of the clarity and sharpness of these shots, were you shooting through the glass? Or do they have designated "photo shooting areas"?

As I say, sorry if its a stupid question.

No, not a stupid question at all. These were all shot through a hole in the glass. The United Center has 8 such holes for photographers. The Big Boys (AP, Getty, team photogs) get the ones just behind the goal line in the corners. Other shooters (like me) get the holes just inside the face off circle.

As you can see on the close-up, the glass is pretty beat up. However, the TV guys shoot right through the glass, but then again, they're not taking still images so the streaks, etc., won't be as visible. Depending on the focal length and aperture you're shooting, the streaks aren't even that noticeable in still shots. Were the glass starts to diminish the quality of the images is when you shoot through it on somewhat of an angle. This REALLY distorts the shot and reduces contrast by a ton.

The hole is 6.5x5.5 inches in size, and the plug comes out easily.

My shutter ranged from 1/640s to 1/1000s. I played with the ISO a little later in the game to get the shutter speeds up. Also stopped down to widen the DOF. As opposed to lower levels of play (HS or even college), the action in an NHL game can be spread over a wider piece of ice, with a lot of cool stuff happening among several players at the same time. For this reason, I found it better to stop down to f/3.5 (and ultimately I had to shoot at f/4.0 when I slapped the TC on my 70-200).

Thanks for looking.

These are fantastic, I especially like #3. I hope one day my shots come out this well!

Exciting team in Chi-town with Toews, Kane, and Sharpe.

Thanks, I will mention the photo holes to my local team....:) but i know what there answer will be...:(

This is the rink I'm working, with its lights full on!!! Spend most of my time on a ladder!!! Notice the even lighting across the ice...NOT !!! WB ! forget it, shoot in RAW sort it afterwards!!

My iso is up around 2000 or more to get 1/640 or more at f2.8....
