Entering the dSLR world with a Canon XTI.
I am very interested in taking landscape shots for a long trip ahead.

So, I am concerned about dropping around $630 for the Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens (in addition to the camera, accessories and another lens) if in the future it cant be used if I do upgrade my camera to one with full-frame sensor or something that wont use the EF-S lens.

I have read the reviews regarding the sigma, tokina equivalent which according to www.the-digital-picture.com (external link) (i think) are slightly inferior, however at my level would these be better options?

pardon my ignorance.
what are your opinions?

Welcome to POTN! I think the 10-22mm will be great for you shooting landscapes. Don't worry about upgrading in the future, If you end up doing that you can sell it and it will have a good resale value.

Get that great lens and start shooting!!

I suggest the same.

Go for the lens and enjoy it without thinking about future body upgrades.

This will also be my next lens purchase as I only heard good comments about it and it's the only lens allowing you to do true UWA photography on a cropped body.

Tried out the 10-22mm and it is a really good lens.I am going to buy it myself when my funds recover from the 50mm 1.4 I just bought. Don't think about what you might need in the future! Think about what will do the job now for you!
Also don't forget Canon lenses always fetch a good price. Go for it, you will not be disapointed.

My advice comes from the advice I was myself given from the good people on this forum.
Which I thank them for! Because they were right.

I worried a long time about the 10-22 and future bodies but then I realized that by not getting one I was just hurting myself in the present. I'm very happy with my 10-22, so happy in fact that the appeal of full frame has drifted away.

Not trying to talk you out of your plan for the 10-22 (I have one and love it), but there is an alternative. You can get really good landscapes using multi-image panos. Take a number of shots, panning left to right (or right to left) and stitch them together in PS (or other image editing software). The result is a much higher resolution image - usually better detail rendering.

It's not hard, but there are a couple of tricks that will make it very easy!

On the other hand, the 10-22 has other uses as well. It makes a great tool for making "strange" perspective shots, something that is difficult or impossible to accomplish any other way.

I rented one and was very impressed. It did a superb job. But the fact that it was ef-s stopped me dead in my tracks from buying one. I buy glass for the long term. I have some lenses that are about 20 years old that I still use. I buy stuff to own, not later trade up to something else.... just my approach. Nothing wrong with the other way either. I don't want to have to make compromised decisions in the future because it will cause a daisy chain of other events.

If you buy it though, you'll like it. The copy I got from RentGlass was tac sharp. Cheers.

nirajpatel13,
First, you don't need a Ultra Wide angle lens for good landscape photos. A 17mm (which is like 27mm on a FF) can take beautiful landscape photos, not to mention you can even use a telephoto lens (or even a macro lens) for excellent landscape photos.

Second, if you ever do upgrade to a FF body you can always sell your EF-s lens with your old 1.6 body or just sell the lens when you don't use or need it :)

Hey there is always the other possibility like I did, I downgraded to a 40D from my 5D :) I like my 40D better then my 5D (much better) and use my 17-40 f/4L for landscape photos and I am very happy with the results.

???

The sigma 10-20 is much less! :D And still great IQ. Quite comparable to the 10-22. Remember, %98.76 of statistics are wrong and something on paper is just something on paper.

Overall, don't worry about the upgrade thing. You don't know when you're going to do it so enjoy it now because now you don't have FF or a wide angle for it.

I love my ef-s lenses. my 10-22 is a huge reason I don't feel I'm missing out on having full frame.

I'm liking my 10-22 and the image quality of my 30D and lenses is not a limiting factor in my photos - my (in)ability is! Buy one used and you won't even need to worry about the depreciation since you can resell for essentially what you paid.
