A crazy idea has just popped up on my mind: stop buying zooms and start (almost) only investing in primes.
So I just took the first step yesterday and sold my 17-55 f/2.8 IS.
One of the reasons is the shallow DOF these small primes can give me. F/2.8 on an APS-C camera doesn't do that to the same extent. Another reason is of course the extra strength in light.
I might get a not-so-expensive wide-angle zoom as well as I can't afford the 14mm. Can't afford the L-primes and actually I believe that most of the Canon non-L primes, deliver great image quality almost on the same level.

What I have now:
Canon 40D and 10D
Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM (doesn't fit with the 10D either)
Sigma APO 100-300 f/4 EX HSM

Near future:
Canon 40D and 10D
Canon EF 28 f/1.8
Canon EF 50 f/1.4
Canon EF 85 f/1.8
(Tokina 12-24 f/4?)
(Canon tele lens of some kind?)

I know it's not 100% primes but sometimes I do need a zoom for the type of photography I do.

Anyway, have other people here taken the step from zooms to primes?

I too prefer primes, I suppose because I was brounht up on them , I prefer moving my feet to zooming, it make sme feel more part of the process. I wouldn't have the 17-40 zoom if there was a 17mm L lens. And I wouldn't have the 70-200f4L if there was a light 200mmL lens
Other than that you're right if you stop down the non 'L' prime lenses, most of them get very close to the 'L' version IQ (stopped down)
Check out these other WA lenses before you go for the 28mm , you might prfer a slightly wider one for the same money..?;)

...I think that I may be following you here. The zooms are nice, but the one good prime I own (15 mm fish) produces excellent IQ. Outstanding.

The L zooms are nice, but those primes make you THINK when you select and use them.

No way I'm gonna sell my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. Shallow DoF is not what I need for landscapes or cityscapes.

A couple months ago I added a 28 f/1.8 and a 50 f/1.4 (85 f/1.8 isn't far behind) and I've been really happy with them. However, I must admit I'm still a zoom guy and I don't think I'd could ever ditch my zooms entirely for primes. :)
