Mostly I want something narrower since I have a 20D.

Can someone recommend an alternate lens hood for my 24-105L?
Does anyone know if the EW-83DII (for the EF 24/1.4L) would work and is it narrower?

Can someone recommend an alternative lens hood for my 20/2.8 and 50/1.4?
I want a petal style hood, do they exist?

Thanks.

The hoods are designed for the lens...if you got a different shape/smaller one it would not be effective for the lens.

In terms of alternatives, I don't think anyone lists any. As Grentz noted, the hoods are designed to work effectively with a given lens (or set of lens in the case of standard length primes).

Yeah no-one ever seems to have compiled much of an extensive list of hoods for different sized sensors.

I was hoping someone on this forum has tried alternative hoods and can give some comments.

Not necessarily. The lens is an EF and therefore it and it's hood was designed for a full frame camera. If the lens is being used on a camera primarily designed for EF-S lens then arguably the standard lens hood on an EF lens could be more effective if it was a different shape to take account of the smaller FOV.

Exactly ... you've got my idea ... I want something smaller (narrower diameter); so it fits my camera bag better too.

Anyone with a recommendation?

I was considering maybe a hood made for a 35mm prime lens on the 20mm, if the size fits. Or the hood from 85mm lens on the 50mm prime. Does anyone know if it fits?

If anything the lens hood will likely be larger as the outer diameter will be similar so it'll actually mount to the camera but it'll be longer to cover the longer FL

Does anyone know if the EW-83DII (for the EF 24/1.4L) would work and is it narrower?

Think about the physics for a moment.....

The hood on the 24-105 MUST be able to allow the angle of view at 24mm on a 35mm film camera. The EW-83DII MUST be able to allow the angle of view of its 24mm on a 35mm film camera. What difference would there be? How could it possibly be a significantly narrower hood?

What you want to try to find for the 24-105 (used strictly on an APS-C camera, that is) would be a hood that is originally designed for an EF lens of approximately 38mm (at the short end if for a zoom). Because the 24-105 uses the EW-83H, that tells you that you need the EW-83xxx design to mount the hood.

That said, I can tell you from experience that not all EW-83xxx hoods fit all lenses using EW-83xxx hoods without some rather finicky modifications. In order to use an EW-83DII on my 16-35 f/2.8L (which comes with an EW-83E), I had to modify the "threads" in the EW-83DII to fit the lens properly.

What about alternatives for the 50/1.4 and 20/2.8?

I looked at the Canon hood for the 50/1.4, it isn't a petal; do they make a petal one that will work?

Would the EW-78BII (from the 28-135mm lens) work on the 20/2.8?

Thanks

yes, but i believe that you only need alternate hoods for wider lenses. on telephotos? come one. plus, there may not be so many lenses that can accept alternate hoods - mainly the L series lenses i believe.

What's the importance of the petal style to you - merely to "look cool"?

The only reason that some hoods are carved out to the "petal" profile is to reduce vignetting at the corners. A round hood actually provides more physical protection to your lens than a petal-shaped hood does.
