for some time now, I've been using a red eye reduction technique that I found at the link below.

it works really well, and the results are very natural looking.
sometimes when I shoot photos of animals though, like dogs for example, the eyes turn out bright green, or even purple instead of red, and this technique doesn't work. I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of messing with a different color channel output and probably darkening the pupil, maybe even an inverse of sorts to keep the catch light spot...
I was wondering if anyone knows of a similar technique to correct the photo defect I'm trying to describe.

please refrain from auto correct tool answers; I'm never satisfied with their effects. I'm looking for something along the lines of this process using masks and adjustment layers. as noted, I've tried messing with adjustment layers on different output channels, but have not yet been able to come up with a pleasing result.
